I’m pretty out of shape but I’m very interested in finding my max HR. Since I’m doing a 5k on Monday I figured that I could use my HRM to guage some personal data.
Would it be different if I am in better shape?

If you are truly out of shape, it will be easier to find your max HR than if you were in shape I would think. When you are in shape you have to push much harder to get your max.
If you do the last 1/8-1/4 mile of the race as fast as you possibly can, you’ll probably get real close.
Then make your way to the nearest available trash can and say goodbye to your breakfast.
Max is max. I find that it’s harder to hit max when fit, but max is max and it doesn’t go up and down with fitness.
