Mavic CXR 60 Clincher Wheelset (Jack Mott)

I am considering purchasing a Mavic CXR 60 Clincher wheelset for my racing wheels - my LBS has a sale on Jan 3 and all of their stocked wheels will be discounted to some degree.

Jack Mott: you have provided some pretty positive feedback on this wheelset, but have also said many times: “Use a disc in the rear and as deep of a front wheel as you are comfortable handling.” There are also lots of other posters recommending a deeper rear wheel (60/90 or 60/disc). Is a Mavic 60/60 combination okay or should I be considering some other Mavic mix ? They do stock the CXR 60 and 80 Tubulars, but I prefer to stay with clinchers and the CXR 60 C specs seem to be on par or better than the CXR 80 T specs.

FYI: I’m in Japan and rural enough that my LBS does not stock HED or ZIPP. They carry Mavic, Fulcrum, Shimano and some other European brand wheels. I’m on the light side (130 pounds) and have done all of my racing to date with a 60mm SRAM front and a Wheelbuilder DT Swiss/PowerTap + disc cover on the back (all of which I picked up on a visit to the US).

Thanks,
Dan

60/60 would be pretty good, and I think you could probably fit a disc cover on the back of the 60.

The mavic should definitely be a bit of an upgrade on the SRAM wheels, not a ton but a bit. Plus you get the rad braking surface.

Dcon - Thanks for your interest in the CXR 60 C wheels. If there’s any further info I can help you with, please let me know.
The CXR 60 wheels (in both flavors) test very nearly as fast as the 80s. So you give up almost nothing in aerodynamics, and gain a nice measure of crosswind stability.

It’s widely accepted that a disc rear is always faster. I can’t promise how well a rear wheel cover would fit on the CXR 60 C, but our wind tunnel testers have generally found that the improvement gained by going from a CXR 60 rear to a disc rear is relatively modest.

As JackMott indicated, the brake surface on the CXR 60 C is pretty sweet, especially in mixed climate conditions.

For more info, there is a great article here on slowtwitch by Tom Anhalt regarding the CXR 60 wheels, and Greg Kopecky tested them and wrote them up a few months ago, also here.

JackMott - thanks for your input! all your feedback on the wheels is helpful to us and the entire community.
