I got a deal on these wheels. I think they are 2008ish vintage and in really great shape. I can’t find much for information about them but wanted to consider going with 23mm tires. They had 21mm tires mounted when I bought them (based on their condition, also from around 2008). Can anybody can rev up their flux capacitor and be able to share some knowledge/specs on these?
I bought a pair of Cosmic Carbone SL wheels in 2007. (Clinchers and note the alloy rims.) Probably not the fastest wheels in 2007 and definitely not the fastest wheels today, but they beat box rims. I started with 23 mm wide tires then went to 25 mm wide tires with no problems.
I used them for some training rides and a bunch of races from local sprints to the Silverman Full for the next 12 years. They’re bombproof and although I’ve moved on to some newer wheels I’m not going to toss them nor sell them. They’re still hanging from a couple of hooks in my garage, and who knows when I might need to grab them at the last minute for my 10-speed tri bike.
Thanks, Alvin. I wonder if the difference in SL vs Pro is the full carbon tubular vs. aluminum rim clincher. I’m glad to hear that they have been solid for you.
The Mavic freehubs from that era a definitely 11spd compatible. It was a well discussed feature back when we were first transitioning from 10 to 11. I had a couple sets of Ksyriums from that era also and I tested out the 11 speed cassettes on them with no issues.
don’t know those wheels specifically, but having ridden some mavics in my time, i’m sure you’ll be happy. could you save some weight or get some better wind tunnel results with pricier wheels? sure. but based on my experience, those mavics will run round, smooth, and true for a really long time. enjoy!
I bought a** front** Cosmic Carbone SL wheel in 2012. (Clincher and note the alloy rims.) Probably not the fastest wheels in 2007 and definitely not the fastest wheels today, but they beat box rims. I started with 23 mm wide tires and kept them.
I use it for all races (just) from local sprints and olys currently. They’re bombproof and I’m not going to toss them nor sell them. They’re still on my race day bike.
I bought mine in 2013 and have been using them for the past 10 years. The one issue I had was when I put a Powertap hub on the rear and then it seemed that every year I broke a spoke back there (wheel never went out of true). Last year I decided to have the rear wheel relaced with the original hub (removed hub PT and went with crank PT) and no broken spokes since then. No other issues and probably have at least 30K miles on them.
The newer decals look sharp. I am thinking of stripping off the yellow ones on mine since they clash with my frame colors. It looks like you have the carbon brake track. Do you have a recommendation for brake pads?

I use the recommended Mavic pads (relatively expensive). I’ve tried regular pads with poor results. For the past few years I keep telling myself I’m going to strip off the white decals for a stealthy look but just never get around to it.
Also running a 11spd cassette and 700x25 Conti 5000 clinchers and Wheelbuilder cover.
I have a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbone Premiums from the same era. They were race wheels for a while, but when I mostly quit doing Tris I started running them daily. They are heavy but bullet proof. I have a Titanium bike with S&S couplers that I use to travel and those go with it. They have carried me across Ireland and Spain. I have been running 28s on them for the past few years with no trouble at all.
