Absolutely terrible. But for technicality, he was burglarized, not robbed. In simple terms, robbery is taking something from a person by force or fear (like a mugging). Burglary is entering a building and stealing something. One is a personal crime, one is a property crime.
And agreed, the effects on the kids can be traumatic.
In 2009 my family and friends stayed at an awesome home on Alii’ Drive for the race. I woke up race morning to find the back screen doors ripped open and my wife’s purse gone and my friends napsack with laptop, cell phone wallet, everything gone. Police could care less and said it happens all the time during IM. Great way to start race day! Things have really changed in Kona since the mid 90’s when I use to love the island and couldnt wait to be there.

Read between the lines: we do not give a rat’s ass about all those people coming to hawaii to spend their $$$, nor are we a pro-active PD looking to prevent crime and to pay overtime during and after days leading up to Kona.

He was not the only guy robbed, a guy and his family was robbed of everything in the room including two laptops and even their luggage. They were at a bed and breakfast home. Not good in Kona.
