Mattresses and You

Saw another thread asking about a particular kind of mattress, and since the wife and I are in the market for a new bed, figured I’d open things up a bit more and see what else is out there. What have you got?

Some info: We’re looking at some of the mail order mattresses (Purple, Casper, etc.), have checked out and loved both Sleep Number and the ReST mattresses (too expensive, unfortunately), and have some local, traditional options as well. We both tend to sweat while we sleep, so we need to be careful to select something that helps alleviate heat. The real kicker: She likes soft mattresses, I prefer firm mattresses.

Aaaaaaaaannnnnd… Go.

FWIW we bought a Casper queen about a year ago and couldn’t be happier. The change from our old worn out mattress to the new one was amazing. We were both having back problems and felt better right away. I’d describe it as firm with a soft top. If you’re concerned about it being cool I’d recommend a cooling mattress pad just to be safe, mostly because of the soft top I just don’t feel like it ventilates very well.

Tempurpedic. Best money we ever spent. You can buy two extra long twins as a King, each in different firmnesses.

…you…do…know…that…this…is…a…triathlon…forum…right?

The body naturally releases human growth hormones during sleep which is like a bazillion times more potent for recovery than compression, ice, normatec boots, hanging upside down, taking shots of salt, etc…just ask barry bonds

Something that a person can control that highly influences sleep is the mattress they sleep on

I think the combination of those two things make a discussion on mattresses fairly meaningful to a group of endurance athletes
.

Precisely my reason for this thread. Maybe I should have been more explicit, but figured with this being a Tri forum, it would be understood.

While mattress shopping, I’m looking for a mattress that will promote recovery, by helping me get quality sleep.

My uncle has this exact set up. We sleep on it when we visit every July. It is amazing. They have another Tempur-Pedic in the house. The first time we slept on that is probably the best sleep we’ve had in the last five years.

Also, while we’re on the subject, we recently bought black out blinds to go up in our bedroom. We had an annoyingly bright LED streetlight outside our window and my wife wasn’t sleeping well. After the blinds we sleep even better. Sleep is important. We’re young and it is a priority for us. Good sleep helps you stay healthy.

HATED my CA King Temperpedic! Was too proud to return it. Wanted to love it, really really did. As I’d read countless reviews like those above to justify the purchase. Wifey didn’t have issues, but damn did it sink down through my hips. (6’1" 190) This was back in 2006-07 & like most Americans, never thought about separate mattresses. Anyway, after a year I rolled that sob up like a burrito, threw it into the back of pickup, drove it over to a co-workers that wanted it, gave it away

Fast forward a decade & now I’m over here in Germany. Separate mattresses are the rule, not exception. We ordered dual 90cm Bodyguards earlier this year. 200€ each Couldn’t recommend highly enough!!

can only say we love our sleep number adjustable but it definitely costs a lot.

My last two have been Sterns and Foster, couldn’t be happier.

We ended up with a Sleep Number after a lot of searching. If you wait you can usually find a 50% off sale and they also do 12-24 mo same as cash financing. We’ve really enjoyed the sleep quality.

I’ve always had problems sleeping in hotels, nearly any mattress besides my own gives me severe back problems. The only exception to this is at the hotel I always stay at when I’m on business trips to Taiwan, most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in. All of their beds have 2 mattresses, which I had never seen before. Sounds like its not as unusual as I had thought…

Yes, if you live in a warmer part of the country, you will hate it.

Give me any really firm spring mattress, and I will be happy.

No rocket science or exorbitant prices required.

I really don’t understand that one has to go custom on any Full or Queen longer than 78".

That is just yesterday, like so many things in A am Erica.

Wife and I have a mattress which is effectively 2 separate mattresses zipped together. Means firstly that each one is separately sprung so we both sleep better, and secondly that we could choose different levels of firmness as similar to you guys she prefers a softer mattress to me. Thoroughly recommended!

Ironman T3 mattress?

Brooklyn bedding mattress. Online dealer. Took a chance and it paid off. Check out the reviews. Still very happy with my purchase 1 year later.

Seconded. Our Casper is awesome. We got the king.

my SO and i were in the market recently. When we discussed the online ordering a mattress we decided against it. Obvious pro is the price and convenience. The major negative and dealbreaker for us was that the mattress might be good, but how do we know it would be the better or best option? We wouldn’t. You’d get one mattress and hope it works, make it work, or return it (which may or may not be easy).

I know that mattress testing is very much like test riding a bike. You won’t really know until you’ve slept on it for a while, but my SO and i went to furniture row and a few other places and just tried out a bunch. We ended up liking furniture row the best so we went back there on 3 separate days and spent several hours testing different mattresses for 1+ hour each. This still isn’t a ton of time but it at least let us eliminate a few mattresses that felt good at first but we really didn’t like after taking a nap. Sure, those mattresses might have been “good”, but they weren’t the better or best choices for us. The other bonus was that we had someone helping us check our spine alignment and all that stuff to make sure it looks like we’re where we need to be. We ended up with a serta foam mattress, can’t tell you the specific product. Like some of you, I like more of a firm mattress and her more of a soft one. It wasn’t in the budget to get a split king but the bed we found actually ended up being quite good for both of us. And bonus points for you can pretty much jump on the bed and the other side doesn’t bounce. I no longer wake her up when I get up at 5:00am.

Overall mattress shopping seemed daunting and online seemed like the easy route, but I’m glad we went into the store and spent several hours trying all the different mattresses we thought we liked. We originally liked 5, ended up not liking 2 of them after trying them for 1+ hour and then the remaining 3 was a decision between “good, better, best.”
