Kinda interesting he says that kona’s on his calendar to qualify this year. I thought he was staying short course and halfs, apparently not.
He is one tall dude!

tell me about it, I am over 6 feet and have a picture with him, I look tiny!!

He did his qualifying Ironman last fall at Arizona. Just 70.3s this season I believe, but maybe enough points to squeak in.

Competitor Radio had a Tom Lowe interview last week - he said he’s 6’5", 195 (!). I’ve seen Matty Reed listed at 6’5" 180. I bet the two of them could get a few scrubs and dominate the rec. basketball leagues in Boulder…the podium photo from Steelhead would also be pretty classic.
I’ve got them both beat by half an inch! I weigh 177.

I was wondering who else could round out the front-court. However, if you’re in Ft. Collins, that probably isn’t close enough to play on a Tuesday night league…
Potts and Frodeno are pretty tall as well, I believe. This is all comforting as I’m 6’4" 170. Unlike straight running, tri has plenty of successful tall pros.
He lives in my neighborhood and rides and runs by my house pretty regularly. Running he looks tall, but not huge. When he’s on the bike his lanky-ness is ridiculous… Nice guy, his wife is swell too. Love to see him do well as he goes up to IM…
LOL at the end of the video where he’s talking about the pronunciation of “Asics”.
I like the part where he’s riding with Chrissie and says kind of introduces her as if triathletes wouldn’t know who she is. I wish I had the training facilities/opportunities that Boulder offers!
Just on facebook announced his kona slot… Will be interesting to watch! Best of luck big guy!
Nice video. Glad to see he pulls on the lane line in backstroke like the rest of us mortals (see 1:20 mark). Now I can feel a little less guilty about it . . .
Matt Reed seems like a good guy. But I wonder if any of those guys could actually even touch the rim. Strange what endurance sports does for hops.
Zombie thread on that! http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=3245862;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;
I wonder if there’s a connection between run speed and vertical. We’re the same height, but I’d assume his odds of dunking are higher than mine because he is a faster runner. No idea if that actually is true.
I also have little t-rex arms and small hands.
In the above thread, plenty of people talk about their verticals decreasing after endurance training. I assumed it was the same for me, going from strictly a recreational basketball player to a 6-7 days a week triathlete, but now I’m not so sure. While playing rec ball a few mornings a week gives more jump practice and little sprints on the court work those fast-twitch fibers, I have to assume my track work and running plyos do something.
Regardless, I think you bring up an interesting point. I also wonder how many would tear something moving laterally for defense. I have to assume you could get around BMR or Tom Lowe pretty easily, right?
sprint run speed and vertical - positive correlation
endurance run speed and vertical - negative correlation
.
Wouldn’t be a problem getting around em. However, hoops ain’t their sport so there’s no pride in doing that either.
I get the gist, but I wonder… If I’m a 44 minute 10k guy and he’s a 32 minute 10k guy, are we sure his vertical is less? I’d guess his 1600, 800 and 400 repeats are faster than mine. How short is a sprint? Can we extrapolate to guess his 200 and 100 times would be faster?
If I had to choose between racing Matty Reed down a basketball court or racing him in an open 10k, I’d certainly choose the court, but only because I already know the outcome of the other. I wouldn’t put money down either way!
not sure, no.
he prolly gets a couple inches just for general pro athlete status =)

Certainly there’s more pride in going around an NBA guy, but at my skill level there’s pride (and a pleasant surprise) at going around anyone!
TIL that Matty Reed was born in New Zealand and became a US citizen in 2007. I’ve never heard him speak before and always assumed he was born here.
