I live in North Seattle, I moved here in January. I’m having the WORST time finding a good fit for my swim workouts… the lap swims I have been to (at Madison, Shoreline, and Meadowbrook) are super crowded and not very long time-wise. So, I decided to find a masters program. I’ve been going to Green Lake, a 15 minute drive at 4:40 a.m., but this month they are moving practices to Queen Anne and 10 more precious minutes in the early hours are putting me over the edge. That pool is roasting hot and I don’t seem to get any stroke instruction with our program, there are a lot of swimmers and it seems to have a standard masters attitude of just put your head down and swim and then go to work. I really want a coach and program who will focus on my technique, I don’t care if it means swimming with 8 year olds in some age group team or driving up to 30 mins each way.
Is there some awesome program or coach or pool out there that I am missing? Also, I kinda need to do my swims in the morning. Swimming is my weak point, whenever I go after my other workouts it’s just a waste of time and money. Oh and speaking of money, mine’s super limited.
Enough needs and qualifications?!?? Sorry. But please, help!
I am fairly new to Seattle, moved here last July. I live in West Seattle and swim at All Star fitness (just lap swimming) and this past summer at Colman Park, a 50m outdoor salt water pool (Community pool, but set lap swim times). I typically don’t do the masters route as in my former life I was swimmer.
What are your races/goals that you are training for; there are several groups/teams in the area that focus on different distances.
We have an incredible coach (Wendy Neeley), tons of fast swimmers to chase and model and the most beautiful pool in the Northwest (King County Aquatic Center) that moves from short course to long course all summer (change over in April). Sadly, a bit far south in Federal Way. Thought I’d post for anyone else reading that may be in the South end. Can’t say enough great stuff about the masters team and coach here.

My focus is half IM distance. Oceanside, Wildflower, Boise, Lake Stevens, and then the Tinley’s LC are my main races this year. I’m still pretty slow in the swim. After a year-plus of swimming, I’m doing 100s on the (get ready for it) 1:40.
I was told that masters would really help me. It is cool to swim with other people and get pushed, BUT when my technique still needs a lot of help, I don’t know… And it’s not like I don’t have the motivation to swim on my own, I do, it’s just that swimming on my own at the pools I mentioned was a big challenge (think 6-8 ppl/lane, all doing their own things)
I wish I were closer to All Star Fitness AND Federal Way.
Where was I when this was first posted? We roll 6:00 a.m. M-W-F at All-Star downtown. 20 - 25 people per session, 4000 yards, pretty much all long distance triathletes. Coached by her: http://www.pauolesport.com/, the fast lane gets wicked fast but we’ve got something for everyone. You can easily get a week long pass to try it out. PM me if you need more deets.
Which All Star Fitness in Seattle? I will be in Seattle for a conference in May - staying in a downtown hotel - and would like to catch a few swim workouts while I’m there if possible. Thanks.
