Marshfield, WI Road Biking

Is it possible to get in a 20-30 mile ride without risking your life on a 2 lane highway? Any other feedback about biking in the area will be helpful.

Do you have your bike snow tires on?

I’m talking summer riding…

So am I…

Thanks for the extremely useful, straightforward response.

That’s what I am here for.

As a WI resident, I found your response hilarious.

Howver to answer the OP… County highways (the ones with letters) are technically ‘highways’, but you can often ride them and not get passed by a single car in 15-20 minutes at a time. All depends if it’s during the week before or after work. If it’s a weekend morning, I wouldn’t think twice about it, and would enjoy my time. I still ride county highways for shorter stretches after work, and find it to be fine (and this is a Milwaukee suburb with a heck of a lot more people). If you’re riding on the state highways, I’d pass no matter what the time.

Although I have never rode in Marshfield, I am from that area of the state. You will have absolutely no problem riding where ever you want. The county highways (lettered roads) and country roads are generally mile squares. The state highways (numbers in a rounded corner rectangle with a triangle overlain) will generally be slightly more busy, but usually have about 18inches of pavement right of the white line. Highway 10, the only US highway in the area, is a 4 lane divided highway, east of Marshfield (don’t/can’t ride on that), but west of town it goes to two lanes with a generous paved shoulder.

It will be really easy to ride 30+ miles…

It is in the Amish area of Wisconsin so horse and buggies can be expected, as can modernized farm equipment, milk trucks, and hicks in jacked up pickups…be careful as you would any time you are on the road with motor vehicles!

Have Fun this summer.
