MarkVanAk goes for 1hr record

A couple of minutes ago, Marky V started a 1hr time trial on our computrainer.

If he can do 48 laps of the .5 mile “flat loop” in under and hour he wins $50 Cash (I’ll be posting cash challenges on the front of my web site www.austintricyclist.com )

At 6 laps into it, he’s holding 317 watts and is 10 seconds ahead of goal pace of 1:15 per lap (ie - he’s doing about 1:13.5 per lap).

is there a handicap if you are grotesquely out of shape?

Is that an open challenge? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

If he sets a record (we’ve had 2 little guys hold 23.5 and 275 watts at 150 pounds bike and body weight), then I’ give another $50 if someone can top him.

He’s currently thru 12 laps and is 25 seconds under pace. I think my money might be going away. You better hope he doesn’t set the record to low Boo. Its about 80 degrees and really humid upstairs at the shop but he looks pretty good.

"is there a handicap if you are grotesquely out of shape? "

That would be for you to judge.

At 24 laps he is 45 seconds ahead of pace (he went thru in 29:15).
Interestingly, his PowerTap is reading 26.0 and 300 watts while the CT is reading 24.5 and 315 watts.
From personal experience, I’ve always felt like the CT reads 1 to 2 MPH slow.

The reason the powertap is reading faster with lower wattage is he is riding in his big ring. I prefer to do the same when I use the CT. The one major problem I have noticed from using both simultaneously is the CT is very sensitive to calibration and gearing. Different calibration settings combined with different gearing ratios provide different values for speed and wattage when using in ergo mode. I always prefer to have my powertap on to justify the CT data.

GO Mark! tell him he is going to time trial a 56 once he puts on the LT Cycles Dynamis Disc Cover.

TJ Tollakson

He went thru the 3/4 point in 43:57. His avg watts have fallen to 314 and he’s sweating like a pig but I think he’ll hold on for the money.

tell him hi from theswiss and that he should hang in there
.

He just finished in 58:27, 24.6 mph @ 316 watts!

Do you think you can top that R Boo R?

Very nice job Mark V, now if I could only swim 58;27 in an IM I’d be very happy
Herbert
.

good job!

and what’s R Boo R?

That’s RunBooRun (or Patrick Healey). He was 3rd fastest amateur bike at IM AZ and one of only 14 guys to go under 5 hrs.

Its about 80 degrees and really humid upstairs at the shop …
Come on Don… crank up the AC for the poor guy, LOL!

Poor Mark, first someone wants a head to head with him, Bjorn and Sergio, now the “enormous” task of going under 1 hour for 40k. You make him sound like a poser when he certainly he is not. Like he said, he’ll get there

Anyway, someone to go under 5 hours last April 9th will certainly beat that, I’m figuring under 55mmin without a problem.

I’m trying to wear him out so I can drop him tomorrow on the Saturday ride. I’ve been “tapering” all week. This will be my first real extended ride on the new P3C.

CT, BT. Bring it on Marky, Mark. I’m going to leave your QR butt on the side of the road. How about double or nothing if I beat you up the 71 hill?

Of course he’s no poser. He has one of the fastest swim/bike combos in AG multisport.

Going under an hour - strenuous but doable.
Under an hour on the CT is a different story. As his PowerTap showed, you basically have to be almost 2 mph faster to make the cut.

Yeah, I can do it, but I will let Mark have the record for the week. That’s a great time, Mark. Don, I will go for it on a rainy day, its too nice to bike inside, and I need to work on that swim and bike to run more.

Hey SAC, Don is behind Marky V 100%, its just his way of writing and talking. Believe me, we all want him to do good, and we are looking forward to seeing him have a great race at CDA.

Go Marky V!

sig line to follow

How did he do on the 10K run after finishing the bike? Oh right, sorry…
Only two posts, and both nasty ones about Mark… give the guy a break…

Thanks all… it was fun doing the test. Thought I was going to get off the bike feeling like trash but instead felt great afterwards. The CT makes it pretty hard to do what normally would not be that hard of a goal to attain. TJ’s explanation was helpful in clearing up some of that confusion. After a little simple algebra using the power tap data… I got this… 55:35 minute 40K Not bad when IM is the goal.

Thanks again all.
