Mark Sanford, the former South Carolina congressman who lost his seat to a Trump-backed primary challenger last year, is strongly considering a primary challenge of his own against the president.

Sanford told the Post and Courier that he will take the next month to decide whether a long-shot run for the Republican presidential nomination is at all viable in the current Trump-dominated GOP.
“Sometimes in life you’ve got to say what you’ve got to say, whether there’s an audience or not for that message,†Sanford said. “I feel convicted.â€
The former South Carolina lawmaker said he is concerned by his party’s shift away from fiscal responsibility and believes he is well-suited to lead a realignment.
“I’m a Republican. I think the Republican party has lost its way on debt, spending, and financial matters,†he said.
In order to launch a primary challenge, Sanford would need help from state Republican parties, who have the power to decide whether to hold presidential primaries or caucuses should a viable Republican challenger to President Trump emerge. The Republican party in Sanford’s native South Carolina will consider the issue at an upcoming meeting of its Executive Committee and inform the Republican National Committee of its decision by October 1.

I do think that more will speak up, after their primaries. Because they are cowards.

Long before Republicans get to play a card about whether Trump is better than (insert Dem name here), they have to decide if he truly is the best that their party has to offer. An incumbent President isn’t automatically the nominee. So, Republicans, are you going to offer up a blatant, unapologetic racist or can your party do better?
Before we had Trump v. Hillary we had Trump v. EVERYBODY in the Republican Party (barely an exaggeration) and Republicans said loud and clear that Trump was the best their party had to offer. So, they can choose again. Is the racist still the best of the party?

Nearly unbelievably, he won his Senate seat after his hiking adventures.
It was a house seat.
Of course I give him credit. Everyone else caught says, “I am sorry, I love my wife, this was a mistake.” When he was caught he was all, “I did it because I am in love with this woman.” So he gets points for honesty and being unique.
I think someone like Nikki Haley could take the party’s nomination and have a good chance in the general election- especially against Biden.
She’s been coy on Trump -calls him out selectively and infrequently, but has put enough distance from him to make herself not one of his team- and might be the only person to be able to get elected after working in the Trump Administration.
She checks a bunch of my boxes. I like that she was a governor and has some experience in the executive branch dealing with a legislative branch. A little light on national security and foreign policy- her couple of years as US Ambassador the UN are a good start, but she needs some additional help from the right running mate or the right National Security team.

Just watched Republican and former Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh shred Trump on CNN. Came right out with it; he’s a racist and I can’t and don’t support him.
They followed that right up with George Will in a scathing attack on Trump.

Since we are talking fantasy land… if only there was a path for Republicans in Congress to help the current occupant out of office sooner than the primary mud slinging and take back their party. Might be too late for that however.
