Marines Doing Marine Things like its 1775

So a drone was in range of the USS Boxer in the Strait of Hormuz. The Boxer is amphibious ship with elements of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed aboard.

A fixed-wing unmanned aerial system (UAS) approached Boxer and closed within a threatening range. The ship took defensive action against the UAS to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew,” a Pentagon spokesman said in a Thursday afternoon statement provided to USNI News.
The statement did not detail the method in which Boxer downed the drone. The ship is armed with RIM-7 Sea Sparrow short-range anti-ship missiles, and the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) and Phalanx CIWS point defense weapons systems. Additionally, the Navy and the Marine Corps have begun to field a wide variety of non-kinetic systems capable of downing a drone by other means.

Did they use the ships weapons system to take down the drone? Not when you have Marines aboard your ship, you send them out to the flight deck and let them release their Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System mounted on a MRZR light vehicle.

Apparently is is 1775 again.

The lives of Marines in a MEU on ship consists of basically several days of: PT. Clean Weapons. Squad Leader classes. Eat until you’re sleepy. Sleep until you’re hungry. Repeat.

Then a few days off the ship breaking shit.

Repeat for 6 months.

This time they didn’t need to leave the ship to break something.

Eating crayons is a step up in taste from eating the MRE sawdust -comically labeled as oatmeal- bar from the 1990s. And when combined with glue, crayons provide all the essential nutrition for the lean, mean, fighting machines of the USMC to kick ass and take names across the globe. This is well documented.

However, I didn’t know the Marines were the only ones who drew dicks.

A couple Navy Pilots figured it out.

I’ve read that in the Air Force, they have officers that have their airmen send them dick pics. But those are real pictures, not drawn with half eaten crayons.

So are you telling me soldiers don’t draw dick pics? I just can’t believe that… I thought soldiers have been drawing dicks for nearly 2000 years.

It’s all good brother. My son’s first float was on the Tarawa (LHA 1) i have a hat and a rough seas coffee mug he gifted me from that float. He’s in the Reserves now and is LPO of his NOSC–making his first attempt at getting into the Goat Locker this coming year. He has some great stories about the Marines they had aboard and the shit that they would get up to.

Last rotation I worked a bunch with MARSOC Raiders. Those dudes put some serious hurt on ISIS-K and the Talibs in their AO and i got to help set the table and watch them eat the meal. They made me a Raider shoulder patch like theirs only with my data. I’m very proud to have helped them.

i helped a Raider SSgt publish a paper (classified) on how to employ the system i brought to the table in the overall targeting methodology the ETT was using. It was a good paper with solid TTPs for the community at large–and no crayons were harmed in the writing of the paper.

I spent 22 years in in Marie Corps air defense, retired 6 years ago. I’m jealous of the toys they’re using these days.

And where the hell did this crayon eating thing come from? I never heard it once when I was in. Funny as hell though, and accurately describes a good number of Marines I knew.

I don’t know about the crayon thing- but it makes me chuckle too. Some of the smartest people with the best leadership and the ability to figure out a way to get shit done were Marines. Some of the biggest knuckleheads- but tough, dedicated, and mission focused- with the ability to figure out a way to do stupid shit were also Marines.

So I guess it comes from jealousy, I assume, of Marines doing more with less, having better looking uniforms, and the unique adoration of a nation.

Nonetheless, this is a pretty cool improvised use of equipment, adapted to a different purpose, to overcome a threat.

Marines never stop training. I’d loved to have been in the room with the MEU commander and that section/battery leader.

MEU Col: Lt, think you can knock that thing out of the sky
Lt: If we don’t let the Marines off the leash a bit they’re going to start throwing anything not nailed down at that bird.
MEU Col: Ok. but keep it quite.
Lt: Aye-aye Sir! about-faces with a shit eating grin
