Anyone watching the fight tonite? Who do you like?
This should be a good one. I like Margarito by decision - Mosley is a bit past his prime.
I’ve been very impressed with Margarito - and surprised he knocked out Cotto.

I think that the UFC 91 replay is on tonight. Boxing? Never heard of it.
You’re right, the number of boxing fans has dwindled for the past few years.
I used to watch boxing a lot. I grew up during the Tyson, Jones, Holyfield, Tszyu, Chavez era. It was awesome. Then my heros retired and I got De La Hoya, Hatton, Hopkins, Klitscko x 2, Mayweather and I could not get behind them. When Toney was fighting as a heavyweight I was like, “boxing sucks that bad”. I like Mosely but when he tested positive I pretty much stopped watching his work. I miss guys like Gatti, Morales, Gonzales. That was entertainment.
I hear you.
Its difficult for many of us to relate to De La Hoya, Mayweather, Wladimir Klitschko, etc.
However, there’s still some fighters I really like to watch - including Pacquaio, Margarito, the Marquez brothers, and Cotto.
Margarito is fun to watch - if you like Morales and Chavez, I think you’d like Margarito. Another in a long line of great Mexican fighters. This one could be one-sided vs. Mosley.
I like Margarito, Pacquaio, Cotto, Pavlik and a few others. My friend said he stopped liking boxing when boxers started rapping and having reality shows about their lives. I enjoyed Manny kicking the crap out of De La Hoya. Loved it.
Me too.
I wish DeLaHoya would just retire. He’s so past his prime and overrrated.
Not quite working out for your boy. He’s getting whopped, assuming ESPN has it right.
Yes - he got knocked out in the 10th. Boy was I wrong on this one.
What a great fight for Mosley.
That’s one of the reasons I love boxing so much. The upsets are so exciting.
Replays tomorrow on HBO and HBO2, for anyone who’s interested.
Sounds like Margarito tired to pass off some illegal wraps before the fight. Another reason why boxing has a black eye.
Yes, but he was caught before it could effect the outcome. I’m not saying its right, but cheating happens in every sport. Every sport has a bit of a black eye (or should) because of it.
I grew up in the “era of the welter/middleweight”, with Duran, Hagler, Hearns, and Leonard. That a great era. 4 Hall of Famers all fighting each other … like the heavyweights of the 70s. THe Tyson era was just Iron Mike destroying lesser fighters, and unfortunately Mke was 0-3 against halof fame caliber fighters. Heavyweights had a resurgence with the Bowe-Holyfield trilogy, peaking with the Holyfield-Tyson whatever those were. The first fight was awesome.
Boxing is experiencing a resurgence, now that MMA is “not as new” and the emphasis is on the lighter weights (more diversity, styles, and personalities). The heavyweights have become the superheavyweights throw bombs division. I prefer middies as the ‘prefect’ combo of speed, defense, and power.
As for Mosley, he has always been ridiculously fast, and that has presented problems for the “stalk em down” fighters because he gets his punches off first. I did not see the fight tonight, but I would guess that’s what happened. The fighters that present problems for speed guys like Mosley are the counter punchers that wait for you to throw first, evade/block, and then counter before you move (Vernon Forrest … twice). These are also the types that gave Jones problems (at least toward the end of his career).
In my area the fights that get the most attention and intensity ar the fights pairing a HIspanic fighter against a black fighter. We used to go watch these at a Mexican bar (they have since prohibited the mass viewing of PPV events), and there was good-natured cheering all over the place.
There are some serious;y talented fighters in the mix right now, but unfortunately the casual fans only identify with the heavyweights, and that division has been lackluster for some time.
Yes, but it seems that cheating is the norm, not the exception. Hence, why MMA has risen. Cycling and boxing share the same stigma. A few bad apples spoil the bushel.
This is largely what happened to Margarito. Plus, Mosley did a good job of tying him up effectively.
I grew up in the same era as you. Hagler’s always been my favorite, but Sugar Ray beat them all.

The boxing before 1995 or around that time to today
Is like night and day for 90% of fights
