Ran my first marathon last sunday, no walking but hurting the last 10k… from what I have heard you should use your pre-race taper after to get back into things for the most part… This is what I have done so far. nothing for the first 2-days, swim for a 1/2 hour easy on day 3, rode for 1 hour easy on day 5, day 6 off and today I think I will go for a easy 4 miles… to be honest I am afraid of the run and how much it may hurt… please give me some ideas for your own recovery after a marathon… My back ground is I used to run 50 mile weeks 10 years ago… this is my first year back at it. Ran the marathon in 3:47, have run 1/2 at 7:30 pace and 10 miles in 7 min pace. Not sure if you need this info but putting out their. again the marathon hurt a lot the last 10k (ran 8:15pace up to that point then 10s and the rest of the day, day 2 was better but my joints still hurt> is this all typical… thanks for any help you have…
I’d say that’s pretty typical. I did my first marathon in 3:40 and had similar aches. I took a whole week off of running, let most of the soreness subside, then started out with some short 3-4 mi really easy runs.
Your plan sounds good, but I’d probably not worry too much about whether I did any running the first week. I have found I recover best when I do something each day to loosen up the muscles and get the blood flowing. A little swimming or easy spinning is great. Walking or easy running also helps. Usually I feel better after the activity then before. sometimes when I knew I had another marathon in a few weeks, I’ve done exactly what you said ramping up with lsd of 6, 12, 18, 12, race. That worked pretty good. Generally, it is not faster the 2nd or 3rd race, but sometimes I have surprised myself and pr’d that way.
