so the real hoax is the use of the term ‘girlfriend’ in a pure online relationship

Holy cow, that is an insane story on how far and long it went.
I think JSA has it right…hopefully.
When I was reading that article, I kept thinking of the movie “Catfish” which was a documentary about something similar…basically a made up person on one end of an internet relationship. Actually a good movie (its on netflix) and very interesting…in a creepy way.

The Deadspin article is amazing. I believe they have expanded upon it since first releasing it, now with a detailed timeline from 2009 when the “relationship” began to current.
They are reporting that the creator (a male) of the online persona of the girlfriend, knew and was friends with T`eo.
Some other articles are implying that they were more than friends and with T`eo being a devoted Mormon and so visible in playing for Notre Dame, they created the fake girlfriend story to hid their relationship.

Makes sense to me. Sucks to see a kid feel he has to do that though if that was the purpose.

Swarbrick (ND Athletic Director) said Te’o got a call when he was in Orlando for a college football awards show, which was Dec. 6, from a number he knew to be Kekua. The voice on the other end was the one he knew as Kekua, Swarbrick said, and the person on the other end who Te’o had known to be his girlfriend, who he thought died in September, told Te’o she was not dead.
- Wait a minute! So, Te’o thinks this girl he “loves” is dead. On Dec 6, he gets a call from his dead girlfriend. But, in ND’s press conference, they say Te’o told them about the “hoax” on Dec 26. So, your “dead” girlfriend calls you and you don’t tell anyone for 20 days? Seriously?
Swarbrick said it was exclusively an online relationship. He deferred many questions to Te’o, who he said may talk tomorrow.
- Ok, but:
A South Bend Tribune story from Oct. 12 said he met Kekua at Stanford.
- So, he lied his ass off! But, now he says:
Swarbrick said Te’o talked of “meeting” Kekua. When he followed up on that statement with Te’o, Swarbrick said that Te’o explained that he was referring to meeting her online.
- Really? Oh, it gets better:
“Several meetings were set up where Lennay never showed,” Swarbrick said.
- Is anyone still buying this garbage? Te’o also said:
“I’d seen the most beautiful girl I ever met, not because of her physical beauty but the beauty of her character and who she is,” Te’o said in the ESPN interview. “Even though she was fighting leukemia and fighting various things, she always found time to serve someone else.”
- Yeah, but you never saw her, you never met her, yet you portrayed this false relationship.
Bottom line: At worst, Te’o made the whole thing up for publicity. At best, Te’o grossly embellished the relationship and the tragic story for publicity. Either way, he is a clown.
I said I was swayed towards him, not convinced:-) There are a lot of hooes and itis hard to sort out what he said and what he let go because it made a better story. The interview they were showing sure didn’t sound like it was all online. So not sure if he made it up himself or if he let it go so he didn’t sound like a fool with an online only girlfriend.
So he is in the great place of either being a complete fool or a complete fraud. Not a good place to be either way.

Im moving back to Jinan in about 2 weeks, moving n with my GF, working a bit less this year but enrolled in an intensive language course at Shandong UNi.
