Mankind's Fate

The ultimate question whose answer is not 42. How’s it going to end?

  1. On the Beach - Radiation destroys the world
  2. Mad Max - Pockets of humanity survive
  3. Water World - Nature’s revenge
  4. Armageddon - Meteor/Comet
  5. The Rapture - Jesus Saves
  6. Soylent Green - Too many hungry people
  7. Eugenics Wars - Khan!
  8. One World Govt - The UN Gone Berserk
  9. Dawn of the Dead - What’s eating you?
  10. Mankind forced by Aliens to change - Day the Earth Stood Still
  1. Childhood’s End - man moves on to a higher plane

I vote for #6, unchecked population growth, with a possibility of ending up with #2
.

Water World is impossible. But nature could certainly kill us all in other ways.

I’m going to rule out the rapture, that was supposed to happen a long time ago.

Soylent Green is a good possibility, as is Mad Max.

One World Government, not any time soon.

I’m going to rule out zombie too, sadly.

Aliens are a long shot, but I won’t rule it out.

( 1 + 3 ) → 6 → 2

None of your movie choices, IMO, but something much more interesting and exciting: extropic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extropic) self-transformation. Through technology, human beings will radically alter their physical natures. While I believe the mind will function in the same basic way it does now, its efficiency will be enormously improved by bionic implants. As icing on the cake, once these changes are approved by USAT, most of us will finally be capable of a sub-2:00 Olympic distance.

You forgot - Omega Man - Engineered bugs wipe us out
.

You forgot Planet of the Apes, man destroys world, smart monkeys take over and put man in cage with hot bitches in loincloths who can’t talk.

None of the above…

Artificial intelligence. Once “born”, it could have nearly infinite capacity via manipulation of computers and networks. Most likely humans will be seen as irrelevant.

So maybe Terminator, the Matrix, Lawnmower Man…

See also The Dosadi Experiment, The Jesus Incident, and various books by Greg Egan.

Paraphrasing from the amazing show Dead Like Me:
“When a computer loses it’s sh*t with a meter maid, or kills itself because it thinks it’s too fat, then I’ll believe in artificial intelligence.”

But I think “Idiocracy” was more right than people gave it credit. Vote President Camacho, 2020!

12 Monkeys
.

#7 needs to be, Khaaaaaaaaan!

At our rate, I’m thinking more along the lines of Wall E.
