I’ve just moved from London to New York and was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers; specifically I’d really appreciate advice on where to swim. I’m living in Midtown East and realistically will probably only swim twice a week and then very early in the morning. I don’t mind travelling (within reason) to a pool and like everyone else on this island am looking for somewhere cheap, 25m+ and with reasonable crowds.
My first ever tri bike is arriving in the post on Monday so if the weather holds and anyone fancies a run or a bike in the mornings give me a shout.
Look up Mikael Hanson at Enhnace Sports . com - he runs a triathlon school/trianing group kind of a thing and he is in the city. Very knowlegeable guy, and very nice, agreeable, fast, helpful etc. I am sure he could lend a hand to any NYC athletes.
Hey Ben,
Welcome to NYC!
There are several nice pools throughout the NYC area, Asphalt Green probably being the most popular. http://www.asphaltgreen.org/
Lots of triathletes, and serious swimmers frequent there.
The pool is 50 meters early morning on weekends,25 meters during the week.
The downside is its very expensive!! I think the pool membership is about $950.00 a year.
Theres also Riverbank state park pool. http://www.swimmersguide.com/query/Detail.cfm?PoolID=3603 Also a nice 50 meter pool, and very inexpensive($2.00 day). There is a Y in the midtown area that has a nice pool. I believe its in the 50’s on Lexington ave.(do a google search). I cant ride early Monday morning, but if you would like to ride another day PM me. Joe
I used to live in Murray Hill and workout with them at Baruch college (24th and Lex), which has a pretty new 25 meter pool. They’re a group of competitive swimmers and have quite a few triathletes. They also work out at John Jay (Columbus Circle). I always wanted to try out Asphalt Green, but it was a little out of the way.
Their are lots of masters swim teams. One is the NYC Hydras masters swim team. 5 or 6 practices per week, mornings, at Barcuh College (Lex and 24th). about 100/month
There is Equinox. Easiest one with a pool for you would probably be Lex adn 61st(ish) Equinox is about 150/month
There are a couple YMCAs on the east side and as mentioned Ashphalt green.
I think the BEST thing for someone swimming about 2x / week is a tri team. Like Terrier Tri or Enhance Sports. they both have weekly team workouts for SBandR. and these teams are the least expensive thing… couple hundred / YEAR.
NY Sports Clubs (www.nysc.com) has a good pool at 49 street and Broadway. I’m swimming there for several years. It is 18 yards though. But gym equipment, sauna, steam room are big pluses…
You can join any New York City Municipal Pool, and thereby get admission to all of them. Mine is in Chelsea, near where I live, 25 yards, just a few years old and fairly well kept, but they’re all over. Best deal going at $75./year, $10. for 55 and over, free for 18 and under.
Vanderbilt Y at 47th bet 2nd and 3rd. 25 yard pool, $85/month gets you the whole place. Brand new aerobic room full of new treadmills. Pool is fine, but it’s a Y. Also, make sure you head over the GWB and up 9W to Nyack and beyond for some of the best riding for those living in NYC.
If you bike race as well as tri, check out www.crca.net
A cycling club that hosts numerous races in Central Park during the course of the year (as well as several out of town events). Lotta fun…good competition…
Welcome to NYC - Greatest City in the history of the world (yes, haters out there, written with patented born and bred NYC ‘he’s such a jerk’ arrogance ).
