I hate those stories. I hate what the family goes through, I hate the horror of what happened. I hate knowing that humans are capable of such things and that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
I don’t believe in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. But my faith in humanity would move up a solid three notches if she turned up alive. It would really mean a lot.
I agree. My family knows Elizabeth Smart’s family quite well (I grew up only about 1 mile from where she was abducted). My dad is a Mormon church leader, and was the leader of the Smart’s stake (a regional group of congregations), so they had a lot of interaction with the Smart’s during the 9 months she was gone. It was obviously a terrible time for them, but it was very interesting to hear some of the not-so-public feelings, experiences, etc. It rips my heart out to think about one of my kids being taken like that. No parent should ever have to go through that.
Yes, my heart hurts for her and the family every time I see something on this story. Dave, do you have an update on the Smart girl. I wonder how “messed up” she was from the 9 month ordeal.
She actually is doing just fine. My little sister and brother both go to high school with her here in SLC, and both have said that she is quiet, but very normal. She has a boyfriend and is doing okay. I guess she has weekly counseling, but is remarkably adapted back to normal life. She was even chosen as one of the 50 most beautiful people by People Magazine last month. So things seem to be okay with her, thank goodness.
I do fear the Aruba story will not have a happy ending - they’ve now arrested the 3 guys who saw her last and allegedly dropped her off at her hotel (but the hotel’s security camera has shown she never returned to the hotel).
