Man builds Hobbit Home for $5,000

How can you build a house if you have only $5,000? Simon Dale, a self-build devotee, knows the answer. He constructed his woodland home entirely from natural and reclaimed materials, including tiles from a showroom skip and spent $4,900 and only 4 months on this low-impact living. Check out the pictures of the plans of the house and the house itself that reminds of a hobbit house from The Lord of the Rings.

Awesome.

I love these kinds of homes. There is a cobb house in my future.

It would make a great project / guest house on a primary residential property with room to build.

It looks very cool. Reading through the site he has moved out of the hobbit house. I wonder how well it held up. Some of the construction didn’t look like it would keep out water that well. But for a temporary or hobby cabin set up it would be great.

I really liked the aesthetics of it. For someone with little to no experience he was able to make a nice looking house. A bit more care and money to make it sturdier/secure against the elements and that would be a fun house to own.

I don’t see a bathroom. Sounds like the don’t have running water. That would make it tough to live in year round for me but otherwise very cool.

Yeah, it looked great. It would be a very cool house.

My fear would be how well the wood holds up. I’d hate to think he put 4 months into building something and then have it fall apart because the wood wasn’t suited for it.

I actually signed up for their mailing list to help out on their next hobbit-like house building project. I think it’d be fun to help construct one of those houses for a week or so as part of a two week Europe vacation.

Same thought about the water. Beautiful place aside from that.
