Has anyone here ever had any luck with them? which ones? I tried one brand called ‘dr sportstep’ back in the late 80’s, used them for several years and loved them. I can’t find that brand anymore.
the way they worked was you were sent a box that opened into two halfs. there was a styrofoam type material inside, and you stepped into the two halfs of the box to make in impression.
my insurance doesn’t cover orthotics and these are much cheaper than going to the doc.
You will do just as good going to a good, local running store (i.e. Fleet Feet, etc.) and getting some Powersteps, Superfeet, etc. They are about the same and you can then try a few on in your shoes and get the one you like best. The mail order ones are still rarely custom, but they have a lot more sizes, styles and match most feet.
Actually, not that many people actually need custom anyway. Those that do know it … Think of it like a custom bike: most everyone fits one of the stock sizes, then a few adjustments with seat height, stem length, etc. and fine. Does a custom frame fit better - for some of course, but it wouldn’t make a darn bit of difference to me with my dead normal/avg build.
i’m pretty sure i’ve got a leg length discrepency. Would these over the counter orthotics help that?
I would tend to be wary of getting custom mail order orthotics (the kind with the foot molding kit) if you have a leg length discrepancy. That really needs to be measured by someone who knows how to do it, and I think it might be difficult to get the bias right by mail order.
No, but neither would the ones from the Biofoam mail order either! You have to measure or “watch” a LLD - it is not “captured” by stepping into impression foam. Since many people have a functional leg length discrepancy (structural ones are pretty rare), bit doesn’t necessary need a lift anyway. You can add this yourself to a Powerstep or Superfeet.
