Made in Portland: A front rack to carry an extra set of wheels

A friend stopped by the office recently with an interesting new product by Portland-based company TCB Racks. It’s a product only racers are probably going to love and/or understand — a front rack that allows you to carry your precious race wheels on the way to a workout or competition.

TCB was started by former bicycle delivery professional, cyclocross racer, and mechanical engineering student Tad Bamford. Tad debuted his racks at the Oregon Manifest show back in 2008, and he’s been steadily growing his business ever since (last week, we shared how TCB has collaborated with another local company, Ruckus Components).
But his new product (which has yet to be named), is something totally new for TCB

I ahve to say that I “get” the idea, but still think that it is funny that he is carrying Edge cyclocross wheels on his singlespeed.

I’m not sure what is funny. The Edge wheels are SS too.

Maybe you weren’t replying to me, but that’s sort of what I was getting at…it’s not like he was carrying around cross wheels on a fixie hipster bike. That SS probably is his race bike.

The nasty courses seem to draw out the fixies.

So what is the theory here? That the wheels are so fragile that they cant handle a few miles of pavement to and from the race? But they can handle a CX race? What? OR is it a second set for the pit?
