Not sure if you folks saw this, pretty interesting read and surprising that this got no mention during the TV coverage. I’m a fan of his, and happy to have seen him finished in the top 10. My favorite line of the interview and quite funny for us mere mortals:
“The run was very comfortable and I am confident I can run faster if need be in the future. It was a very balanced even paced run for me. I just ran 6:30 per mile from start to finish.”
I was betting on him this year and he’ll be my pick next year as well. He’s got the goods and I think he’s got the heat figured out. Not sure why he was weak at the start this year but the fact that he came around and put together the fastest marathon of the day at a comfortable pace says alot.
While I was on his website I looked around at various things. On his message board I found some interesting things on a thread: Someone asked him what his heart rate was during long runs and he answered: macca Tuesday, August 31, 2004 My heart rate in my longest run would be 110 but that is up hill so around 100, that gets me along at say 4minute km pace.
After this on the same thread there is someone posting about where to get viagra. Where is Macca’s webmaster to clean that up?
um, the conditions this year were completely benign. further, it seems that good sir thomas was the key to him keeping out of the dnf column. yah, he really has kona figured.
i would encourage macca fans to stop reading into things what they want hear as opposed to what in fact is. on paper macca certainly has the talent to win kona but as of right now he’s shown very little of that potentially in hawaii.
I think Macca is definitely extrordinary but the comment about the run being very comfortable seems strange. If it was so comfortable, why did he not crank it up a bit more in the final 10k and go up the placings from 6th to 4th?
