There is something very cool, but also very strange, about Macca and Bozonne training together for the final couple of months leading up to Kona. While I’m sure they’ll push each other in training, most Pros, especially at the top, seem to be guarded about their exact training protocol. To share that information with what will be one of your main rivals at the World Championships, and both having been World Champion, the former at Ironman and the latter at Ironman 70.3, makes the fact that they are training partners interesting to say the least, if not downright odd. At one point, DeBoom and Reid used to train together as training partners, but DeBoom wasn’t yet a threat; i.e., when they were training together, if I remember correctly, both were not yet competing for the victory at Kona - in fact, once DeBoom won or came second, I think they stopped training together. Has Macca lost the fire he once had?
They’re obviously great friends… But macca had better watch out.
I love to see the camaraderie b/t the two training together & think it’s cool they’re doing something to make training more enjoyable for each other as well as push each other. People push each other in training and it makes them better. My opinion: IM Kona is such an event where it’s takes perfect conditions to win it, no training secret, special tactic, training just like someone else who’s won it, etc will make someone win it. Too many variables on that October day, where it takes near perfect conditions/race to win it. It’s not like a magic trick where once you know how it’s done you’ve figured it out how to do it the next time (not saying the OP is saying this though). A lot of the top pros probably train pretty similar anyways.
I trained with Terenzo for 3 weeks this summer. Great nice guy & new friend who let me tag along with him and who pushed me, which was a great mental help and motivation. Training alone gets old. Good post, good discussion. Good luck to them both in Kona (Go T!)
Being a world champion, like macca and crowie have recently said, is all about giving back to the sport. Macca knows Terenzo is the real deal coming up. Macca has already stated that he wants to train and race against the best. Anyone who knows Terenzo knows that he is an awesome guy with a great, fresh attitude. We have seen successful training groups in running and triathlon is the same way. When your not training, you need a release and having those two guys works.
I think there should be more of this. In many other sports the top folks work togther, push harder, share what works and does not. If more folks would not play like their training is an International Secret maybe the times would start to go down…oddly with all of the fancy new stuff from bikes to diet in the past 15+ years…times just have not been getting faster.

They even Tweet together

I heard Macca interviewed in a podcast about this. Basically, he believes Bozonne is several years away from being anything more than top 10 and not even remotely a threat for a podium spot.
I would think that at their level, there are very few “secrets.”
Pro golfers train together, esp. if they’re friends, such as Tiger and Mark O’meara when Tiger was younger. No secrets in golf either.
Most people involved in sport at any level like to find someone that they enjoy being around that is a similar ability athlete.
There are other examples in our sport, such as Jonnyo and Tom Evans. Probably others as well. And I doubt they are really secretive amongst themselves.

Too funny! I love it…
