Lucky me ! Carter is in town

I was fortunate enough to be able to protest Carter’s one sided diatribe against Israel in person tonight, at the Tattered Cover Bookstore, downtown Denver.

Here are some of the main points I find quite disagreeable in Jimmy Carter’s new book, “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid”:

• Israel’s “occupation and colonialization” of the West Bank and Gaza is the reason there is no peace.

FACT: President Carter deliberately overlooks that in 2000, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak went to Camp David and offered Yasser Arafat 95% of the West Bank, 100% of Gaza and part of the Old City of Jerusalem for a Palestinian State, along with $30 billion in compensation for Palestinian refugees. Arafat’s response: launching the bloody Intifada which targeted innocent civilians in restaurants, malls, schools, and religious services with suicide terror attacks. Had Arafat accepted Israel’s offer at Camp David there would have long been a Palestinian State alongside Israel.

• Israel’s ‘Wall’ has virtually choked-off the Palestinian economy and in many ways is worse than South Africa’s former Apartheid system.

FACT: Israel’s temporary security fence has been an effective deterrent in thwarting unending Palestinian suicide terror attacks which have dropped over 90% since its construction. Israel has said that the fence will come down when the Palestinian terror stops. Israel is entitled to protect her citizens from outside threats in the same way as with any sovereign country. It is interesting to note that during his presidency President Carter correctly chose to continue the U.S. embargo of its Soviet-allied neighbor, Cuba because he perceived it as a continuing potential national security threat.

• The actions of Israeli governments do not reflect the will of the people who, in polls consistently show that Israelis overwhelming support a two-state solution.

FACT: Israelis’ support for a two-state solution is predicated on having a peaceful partner that does not seek the destruction of the Jewish State and has a government that renounces terrorism.

• President Carter blames “powerful political, economic and religious forces” in the U.S. for America’s “submissive” pro-Israel policies.

FACT: America’s continuing bipartisan support of Israel is not a result of pressure from “powerful political, economic and religious forces” but based on U.S. interests and the fact that Israel is a democracy whose citizens share common values with the American people. (credit SWC)

Carter sounds more like Ahmadinejad every day.

Peanuts shrivel and go sour with age. Maybe that’s what’s happened to old Jimmy’s brain.

He’s here in Austin tomorrow 10:30am @ Book People - if you are stalking him.

I’m assuming that you actually read his book, and didn’t base your “protest” on clips from right-wing websites.

I hope that is the case.

I agree with you. How sad for Carter. Popular in 1976, then not popular. Popular because of Habitat for Humanity; now watch what happens…

Absolutely ! You’re going to love this news item regarding Kenneth Stein, First Executive Director of the CARTER CENTER and founder of its Midle East Program

I’ll pass. He is my new anti-hero.

I’ve read part of the book. Honestly, I could not bear to finish it. What would be the point? The book is seriously flawed, so much so that Alan Dershowitz wrote “A mere listing of Mr Carter’s mistakes and omisions would fill a volume the size of his book”

Btw…I was just on the news here as the five second story was lead off with " Former President Carter was greeted with protesters…

• Israel’s “occupation and colonialization” of the West Bank and Gaza is the reason there is no peace.

FACT: President Carter deliberately overlooks that in 2000,

The problems in Israel go back to the 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s, when there were jewish terrorists groups forcing the deportation of palestinians. The wars that Israel has been in against it’s neighbors is a direct result of how Israel was created. The Arabs have since the beginning rightly believed that the creation of Israel was illegal, and that the deportation of Palestinians is illegal.

Also, the wall does create undue hardship on the palestinians, many that work in Israel and have to wait in 3 hour lines each way to get to wrok.

Carter is right, the epicenter of all the problems in the middle east are based in Israel. Our support of Israel is the reason we have terrorism problems today.

** Our support of Israel is the reason we have terrorism problems today.**

Wrong answer. It may be one of the reasons, but I would think that even you would blame most of it on American imperialism and the manner in which the region has been exploited by the West for the last 100 years, even all the way back to the crusades if you want to get technical. Isreal is part of that imperialism and a symptom of the problem and not the cause.

Mike

Our support of Israel is the reason we have terrorism problems today.

Hmm. And all along, I thought that terrorists were the reason that we have terrorism.

Who’da thunk it?

" Our support of Israel is the reason we have terrorism problems today."

I am getting a big chuckle out of the idea that the reason Sunnis are killing Shia in Iraq is because of Israel.

Does anyone actually believe such nonsense?

Yahey, don’t waste your time. Most on this board think all the Israeli/Pal problems began in 1948 and don’t want you to shake up their world view.

Actually the conflict preceeds even the 30’s with it’s roots in late 19th century. A good read on the subject is “The Iron Wall” by Avi Shaim, a jewish historian. It’s a balanced view and he cites numerous references.

If you want to go back in history, almost all national boundaries are created by some conflict or other, of one people defeating another. You know as well as I or anyone else, that is not the definition of terrorism. The Jews considered that land their sacred right and the Muslims considered it theirs.

Not deferring to any particular religious group over the other … as in history anywhere … to the winners go the spoils. We’re supposed to be improved and less barbaric now.

However, taking a preference to religion … logically let’s take sides with the one whose our ally and who has an ideology of democracy as opposed to one who expects our financial aid as if we owed them a living but in return still so want to hate our guts and in their barbaric way still follow an ideology that seeks to destroy ‘non-believers’.

The more radical Palestinians and Lebanese the Israeli find necessary to wipe out … so what? Thanks Israel, for doing the dirty work and cleaning up. Too bad the sheep politics has prevented you from cleaning house altogether. But things change and that may be necessary soon with Iran … clean house …Good luck!

As for you Ya fucking Hey … if you want to make a statement, don’t conveniently colour the facts to suit your own Frenchy radical agenda. Take a page out of my book. When it is a fact make sure it’s a fact and not a poor attempt to be one and when it’s an opinion make it obvious that it is also and don’t do that little YaHey radical twisty thing … it’s a non-plus in the credibility department, plus an insult to the intelligence of those reading it here.

Ranger Roo …Out!

Actually the conflict preceeds even the 30’s with it’s roots in late 19th century.

Couldn’t one easily argue that the conflict goes all the way back to Abraham’s two sons, Isaac and Ishmael? Most accept that those two are the fathers of the two groups in question. There was conflict in this relationship that significantly predates the 19th century…

Mike

Actually, there is some obscure documentation that indicates that Jews have some claims and historic conflicts in that part of the world that predate even the 19th century.

If you go into a book store specializing in rare and obscure books and ask them if they have a copy of what was at one time referred to as the Bible, they might be able to help you.

So now you think that you the squid and YaHey are more intelligent than the rest of us? … I know you may be thinking a little twisty to do a flame on me in terms of my personal intelligence but your “don’t waste your time” mentoring advice to that Frenchy Radical was meant for all as a whole.

You can target me but don’t use it as an excuse to not answer why you think you and YaHey have superior intellect than everyone else here. As if we didn’t know that the conflict in that region is steeped in history. Like it was a secret between two superior intellects yourself and Ya frikin Hey. What an effing wanker you are.

You sir are the WINNER!

oh…I almost forgot to blast YaHeyWhat’sHis Name… that “inconvenient Wall” that you refer to is credited with cutting suicide bomber attacks by 90% since it’s creation.

Jewish Terrorists…hah! That would make my Bubby and Zadie laugh. Maybe you meant to write “Jewish Delicatessens caused the deportation of Arabs” since they could not stand the pickled herring or derma

Our support of Israel is the reason we have terrorism problems today. - YaHey aka Septic Tank

Hey Thunder, I wonder how Ya frikin Hey figures India supports Israel. Earlier this year multiple synchronized bombs on packed trains of civillians were detonated and killed hundreds … courtersy of? … no prizes for guessing… He never let’s up on the crap … it’s an endless supply hence the well earned title Septic Tank.
