Lubricant down under

Hey guys. What lubricant are you all using. For short rides I am not too worried about it. For my long rides, I know that I need something. So what are you all using.

Body Glide…

I’m told Assos is the best, and I’m currently working through a tube of *chamois butt’r *- but I’ve also heard excellent things about products made for cow’s udders. Bag Balm, Udder Butter, etc. They’re **FAR **cheaper than the cycling specific ones, and (I’m told) just as good.

You can get a huge tin of bag balm for about $3 at costco.

Khai, you are in Vancouver correct where did you get your *chamois butt’r *from. Anyone local carrying that product. I was told about the other suggestions that you had. I might look into that.

You know, I honestly have no idea where I got it. I’d try *Campione *and *La Bicicletta first, *as they’re the high-end roadie shops in town. Greg @ *Tri-Action *might have some, and it’s possible (although highly unlikely) that *Bicycle Sports Pacific *may carry it as well.

Your best bet is probably to open up the Yellow Pages and just call around. Sorry I can’t be more help…

The Assos is great. For tri’s, I use sportslick b/c it doesn’t wash off in water.

Bag Balm, works great.

Am I the only guy that uses a big old glob of plain old Vaseline? It is super cheap and has worked for me for years in many 100 mile rides.

Aloha,

Larry

Larry, I am with you. I use vaseline. I used to have a lot of problems with saddles sores. Since I started using vaseline. No more chafing, no more sores.

How can you guys use bag balm? I tried it, but it is a terrible experience. It is extremely messy and doesn’t wash off the hand after you applicate, and it actually made me more uncomfortable. I couldn’t stand the stuff, but I’m bummed because everyone seems to like it and it is so cheap.

Assos is definitely my favorite, but it is expernsive. Right now I am using Butt’r and it seems to be adequate when put on fairly liberally.

I’ve tried about all of the products mentioned. The Assos is great, but expensive. The advantage of the ‘non petroleum jelly’ products is that they are easier to wash out of your cycling clothes. The inexpensive ones like Bag Balm are harder to get out of your clothes.

I use Kentucky (KY) Jelly. Just don’t put it on your bagels though.
