Lubbock, Texas questions

What’s a good bike shop to fedex my bike to before a race?

What temperature will the Buffalo Springs Lake be in mid-April?

Any good camping near the 70.3 race course?

What is it, the last 20 yrs have been wet suit legal? Spring fed. Water is cool compared to the air temp. I believe that there is camping within the park. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Not sure about a LBS.

  3. camp at the race site http://buffalospringslake.net/

Good Luck! I will be working the run aid station.

cool thanks…great info.

Have you worked this race before? I assume the campsites are hard to get due to not having reservations and being first-come/first-served.

collegiates?

Not to hijack the thread (and it’s good to know about the water temperature), but does anyone have any suggestions for a hotel for the 70.3 in late June?

This is the first time we have hosted the collegiate nationals. I would do the open sprint but want to watch the other races. You should call the lake and pay for a camp site. Ask for Heather. I am sure she will take care of you.

I live at the lake if you need any help.

The host hotel last year was the Holiday Inn on south loop. (806) 797-3241

i think there is a best western that is cheap and really close. I’ll ask some of my friends tomorrow. We were going to make a trek out there to train later this month.

there is nowhwhere theat is really close to the lake- the lake is out in the middle of a park, which is in turn out in the middle of a bunch of cotton fields. Only place close to the park is camping (which there is plenty of).

There are a ton of hotels in a strip-mall all near the registration hotel- just look at the registriont website, see the hotel (i think its a holiday inn) and then google around there- there are a ton. They are all equally bland.

btw- wasnt crazy about the race. Race was ok, but lubbock is a real pit.

Residence Inn on the loop is great. It is about 3 blocks from the host hotel, quiet, has a kitchen.
Many pros stay at this hotel.

Also, all those hotels are close to restaurants, though the best pasta place in town (Orlando’s, Natalie Maines once worked there) is about five miles from that strip of hotels. Not much for nutritious, organic eatin’ in the Hub City, either; be prepared.

Very cold means different things to different people. The picture from #2 with the snow coverage is from April 2007.

Mid 50’s?

Edit: Why can’t you participate in the Sprint and watch the other races? Are they all going off at the same time? I haven’t seen a race day itinerary yet (nor have a looked too closely).

Water should be mid to upper 50’s

Sprint wave is first.

College National wave will be second.

I have herd they are also going to have a draft legal race with prize money the same weekend.

Is that a Texas joke?

Thanks for the info. 7am Sprint start and 8:30am Nationals start. My original plan was to rent some race wheels for the girlfriend but also enjoy using them myself. I probably won’t have time for that; I guess she gets 'em.

For the record Bostonians don’t have much luck with spelling either.

I’ve learned to look past the spelling issues here. I was thinking that it was cute that perhaps the word herd slipped in subconsciously. I have beer known to type my stream of consciousness as well. (WI native)

Unless you have a self contained RV I wouldn’t recommend camping at the park. I was going to camp there for a week before last years race and was so disgusted with the place that I stayed at the KOA (about 30 minutes away) and Palo Duro state park. It is a nice place to drive your speed boat around and drink beer with friends but not for camping. The race is also excellent.

Thanks for the head’s up- made reservations a couple of days ago. The race website I was looking at didn’t have that information.

Thanks for the information and nice to know about the kitchens. I’ll see if I can get a deal there similar to the Holiday Inn- if not I’ll probably just bring some grub in a cooler.
