LR Profanity

Can we get a fucking clarification on the use of profanity here in the LR slowman?

You can swear, you just have to be classy about it.

Now, go in the corner and self-fornicate.

See what I mean?

I’d rather less. It’s a family site, or at least it can be fun for the whole fam if we keep the language pretty clean.

I’m confused because I just don’t see enough profanity that anyone would notice.

The Scriptures tell us that one day the Lord God revealed Himself to Abram and spoke with him. You need to know that in early times, God occasionally spoke directly with people, because they did not yet have the Writings of the Prophets. Today God speaks to people through the Holy Scriptures. That is why we no longer need words which resound from the sky, or visions, or angels in order to know God’s way of righteousness. When we meditate upon the Holy Scriptures, we are listening to the voice of God. Why do I tell you this? Because God has called you to stop the profanity laced posting in the lavender room. This is a new fun loving place where we encompass other beliefs and opinions.

Chainpain, God loves you.

Sure, I can clarify it for you. The classless posters, especially those whose language skills aren’t very powerful anyway, will use it day in and day out. Those posters who have class will use it only under the most extreme provocation, if at all.

A while back someone asked me not to post profanity in the post titles and I stopped (only did it a few times anyways).

I guess I just wanted clarification, since the last time this was asked Dan responeded like this:

“in general, i don’t do too much about profanity, because i don’t much like to censor. but if the profanity is really fucking bad then, yes, i’ll do something about it.”

And since he seems to have a big fucking hair across his ass today (haha, just kidding) I didn’t know if this may be an issue that is making people less likely to post.

In my opinion the reason to avoid profanity (especially in thread titles) is a courtesy to the folks reading at work. A lot of companies will detect and log that sort of thing an will use it against you (or blacklist the forum completely). Not really anything more than self-enforceable and I’m certainly guilty as well here and there but that’s my take.

The LR a family site??? Hahahahaha

Of all the sites I chose to visit this is the only site where I see the “N-word” tossed around with no regards as to how it makes people feel. If that word is ok, then in my opinion every other word should be as well.

What he said!

"Those posters who have class will use it only under the most extreme provocation, if at all. "

But a lot of the classless posters, me for example, are still very adorable.

It means you can say fucking, but you can’t say bloody.

I don’t think I have ever seen it used in an aggressive manner toward another poster, but, yeah, I totally agree with your point.

That’s a pretty dysfunctional family.

Where and when?

Other than Tibbs trying to be too fly for a white guy.

Just do a search, you’ll find the word used quite a bit as part of various discussions.

Oh, as part of discussion but not as a direct pejorative.

Reminds me of the time I was flying with this black comedian down to Puerto Rico who was filling some bit part in one of the Fast and Furious movies. We were both killing each other (I gave him some good material) with some funny shit. I told him, “Dude, you can call me a cracker any time.” and he just laughed and said but I won’t. Guess, you had to be there…Point being and that he was trying to make in one of his standup routines is we (and all the brothers included) tend to take ourselves way too seriously.

Let’s get back to being profane and all.

What about swearing in other languages? Can I use merde or (cover your eyes if you’re from Quebe and easily offended) tabernacle?

Sadly I only know how to swear in Quebec French. Happy to learn France-French profanity if anyone is willing to share.

The word “nigger” had been used a grand total of 25 times since January. Given the amount of traffic, I’d say that’s pretty low.

Of those 25 times, all of them have been in a similar context to the following quote by DaveW:

I was thinking the same thing. The article I read yesterday mentioned charging only the driver with murder, and one other guy with assault or something…yet there was two truck-loads of kids good with heading of to “fuck with some niggers” or something to that effect. Minimum of assault with deadly intent for all of them.

There’s a difference between calling someone a word, or referring to that word in some context that has nothing to do actually trying to deride or offend someone.

As one of the most serious defenders of the rights of the oppressed, I am completely against the use of these kinds of slurs. However, I am also against the blanket censorship of such words. Despite Slowman’s policy on the word retarded, I think we should actually be able to type, “Slowman has a policy against the word retarded,” as well as, “these kids used to be official called retarded,” or "the end of this musical phrase has a retard on it, as the word actually has a definition associated with it.
