LR Opinions on AZ $1 Million Voting 'Powerball'?

I think it stinks. If people cannot get off their arses and vote then why should we give them a chance to do so? I live in Scottsdale and really don’t want alot of the people who I know in some neighborhoods voting. Biased? Yes. when people start making educated decisions on the direction of our city/state, thats when they should vote. Why pay them to?

I think it is a great idea. It would shake up the Dem’s and Repub. because the one thing they both fear is New voter turnout cause they dont know which way they would vote, and it might even start a movement to get other parties involved.

I think it encourages people to vote jusat for a chance at a cool mil … not voting because they want to take a stand on certain issues or because they feel it is part of their duty as a citizen.

In short, having a bunch of people that care nothing of politics and know nothing of the issues/candidates voting … might not be all positive.

I’m all for people voting … but I think people should vote because they want to, or because they want to make a change, or influence government … but not just as a chance to win a million bucks.

Well, I Vote, I know I wont make a change or influence government, but if I won a million dollars I could make a change and influence government.

Oh, a new demographic that is voting for its pocketbooks would make a change and influence government also.

Well, I Vote, I know I wont make a change or influence government

We can argue the effectiveness (or lack therof) of one vote, but by voting you are most certainly influencing the governmental people and/or issues.

I am talking about people that might just fill in the ballot in random fashion, just to say they voted “now, sign me up for the million”.

How often that might happen, I couldn’t guess.

We do want to encourage everyone to vote … but we also want to encourage that they be informed of the candidates/issues. We don’t want a large number of folks that just fill in circles or punch tabs just to get it over with and get signed up for the voting lottery.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Well I could tell you the story of the people behind me in line a few Pres. elections ago. They were talking about having to get home soon cause they were missing some dumb show, then started talking about who they were voting for and why. Unfortunately I do not remember the details, but I do remember they had the candidates backwards.

Then you have the folks who go and select single party line. They two are uninformed.

So I say anything to get more people to vote the better. SHOCK THE SYSTEM

Probably a bad idea. More uneducated (about the issues/candidates) voters, more people who will be swayed by dumb reasons. People should vote based on their own analysis of the candidates, not based on the best marketing campaign.

What country do you live in? Most voters have no clue of the issues, and only know what they see in 30sec commercials.

Analysis of the candidates, get real people do not take the time to analyze anything they might miss desperate housewives.

Fair enough. I can’t hwlp but think this will make a bad situation worse.

Most people vote for a candidate based on looks, or because they’ve always voted for that party, or becaues of a single issue (abortion, gun control, etc). The vast majority of voters don’t have much of a grasp of the issues. Something greater than 50% of Republican voters surveyed as they exited the polls in 2004 were sure that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.

I don’t see how more people voting would change much.

I think it’s a great idea if it keeps everyone else home so I win the million. While I appreciate the idea to get more people involved in the election, I think a small % of the total voting population in AZ will be playing the lottery.

4hrs to read through all that stuff? How slow do you read?
