Just wanted to let you know how much I love my Conti Ultra Gatorskin 700c clinchers. I haven’t put that many miles on them but I’m very impressed by how well they ride and grip for a highly puncture-resistant tire.
They don’t feel heavy like my previous Armadillo tires. And they feel like a ‘real’ tire instead of hard plastic like a lot of other bullet-proof tires.
I had about 100 miles on a pair of these. Ran over something sharp. It tried to puncture the crown, couldn’t go through. Too bad the tire then rolled off it and opened up about a 3/4" gash in the sidewall, pffffft, whooosh, bamn, broken arm.
But, once I was able to ride again, I used them the rest of the season, they are fairly tough, don’t cut easily, but don’t expect miracles.
My experience with Gatorskins is that they’re closer to normal tires than armored tires. They were fine on the country roads of the midwest but once I moved to Colorado, I was puncturing them every 3 rides. Then I switched to Armadillos and haven’t had a flat in 5000 mi out here. I see thorns stick in the tire and before I can stop and remove them, they’ve usually given up and fallen out w/o causing a puncture.
Does anyone know where I can get some Armidillos for a 650 wheel? I have searched all the online tri stores I know of. Anyone know of a secret location? Do they even make them for 650 wheels?
