Love

Despite the “newly single thread” and the “I hate Valentine’s Day” thread, I am going into this territory anyway…

I have a wonderful wife and a great marriage. I waited till I was 43(!) and yes Erika is more than 16 years younger than I am, and also smarter, better-looking and the nicest person I have ever met.

She has endured many triathlon related days and nights, letting me spend on wheels and gear and has actually raced a few herself, just to be part of it all. And…she stood at the top of Palani and the Queen K for HOURS in 2001 waiting for me to stagger in…and then sprinted to the finish and was somehow standing right next to Julie Moss as Julie put the lei around my neck.

I have my bikes, she has her horses, and she is the greatest woman in the world. If you have the same, you know what it is like to have such a partner. If you don’t, it is my absolute hope you find it.

Best,

Mark

I here ya Mark

I’m in for 19 years in May and counting! I’m not a tri guy so my cycling habit dose not take as much time as all of your training. I don’t train as much as I would like but that’s just the trade off you have to make in a marriage. And there is nothing better then having the one you love at the finish line!

Dan…

right on. while I’m down on the holiday of valentines, I’m all for love. while I thought i would marry a cowboy, or a dark haired european man, I’m thrilled to have landed the funniest, silliest, coolest guy I ever met (flat top and all). we’re in our 4th year of marriage, and going on 7 or 8 years total. life with supportive love is so sweet! I don’t know what I’d do without him. i love him everyday–no need for valentines. my life would be nowhere as nice without my husband…he’s really terrific!!! (gush, gush)

I think David Byrne said it best …

“The world moves on a womans hips
The world moves and it swivels and bops
The world moves on a womans hips
The world moves and it bounces and hops
A world of light … she’s gonna open our eyes up
A world of light … she’s gonna open our eyes up
She’s gonna hold it/move it/hold it/move it/hold it/move it/hold it/move it
A world of light … she’s gonna open out eyes up.”

But also …

"When my love
Stands next to your love,
I can’t define love
When it’s not love.

“It’s not love.
It’s not love.
Which is my face,
Which is a building,
Which is on fire.”

I love my wife and hate Valentine’s day – I think Valentines day puts a price tag on love – I hate that!! TV commercials saying “If you do not buy this diamond braclet for your wife you do not love her enough!!”

Forget that!!!

I can show my wife I love her without buying Jewelry!!!

I just bought her a Trico Bike Case - she will love that way more than Jewels (She loves her bike more than Jewels!!)

I could not have said it better! I thought I would marry an athlete, and while my wife “works-out” she is not a triathlete, runner, swimmer, etc I still love her dearly. We are going on 8 years married and 10 years together. I could not be happier!

It is very pleasant and encouraging to hear this, and it speaks very well of you that you are appreciative and acknowledge your good fortune.

However, it is no accident. The fact that you acknowledge this is a big part of the reason you are successful at your relationship.

For us self-important whiners moaning about Valentine’s Day, well, we really could learn a lot from a guy like you and a relationship such as yours- and I mean that in the most sincere way.

Nice to read, thanks for sharing that. And Happy Valentine’s Day to the both of you.

Ahh,Tom thanks for that…but she really is the better half in this duo.

Hang in there my 40-something young man…it’ll hit you when you least expect it!

“Erika is more than 16 years younger than I am, and also smarter, better-looking and the nicest person I have ever met.”

Ahhhh…so THAT’S the secret
