This weekend I came home to some loud music in my neighborhood. I had assumed the neighbors right behind me were having a party. Man, it was really loud. I went inside and noticed that the base was penetrating right through my house. Thump, thump-thump. Thump, thump-thump.
The Mrs. and I were going out to eat, anyway, but on the way out I wanted to see what was going on. I turned down the last street before leaving the neighborhood. It was lined with cars, so clearly someone was having a party. I got to the end and saw a full DJ set up at the end of the driveway in front of the house. It wasn’t facing the house, but rather facing the culdesac, which would make it face the rest of the neighborhood.
Note…this wasn’t the neighbor right behind me. This was probably 150 meters away. Close, but not next door pointed right at my house close.
I’ve played in bands and have a similar PA system. It wasn’t set up to a good “party level.” It was turned up about as loud as a PA system can possibly go. And dancing in front of is was NOBODY. Everyone was clearly inside, or behind the house, probably because the music was way too fucking loud.
I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 10 years. This is the first time anything like this has happened.

So my question is, what kind of person does this?
That sounds like a stunt that a garage band heavy metal drummer would pull off.
The same kind of person that walks down your quiet street at 10:30 pm playing shitty music from his iPhone through speakers, not headphones. No, everyone has to hear his shitty music.
That was last week when I went out to put some garbage in my garage.

I used to live near downtown, on the 3rd floor of an apartment. Once a week, a homeless guy, with his shopping cart full of cans, would slowly rattle his way down the middle of the road at 2-4am, blasting heavy metal from a shitty speaker. Now and then someone would go on their balcony and tell at him, but, he didn’t care. Once I got so pissed I smoked him with a grapefruit from the third floor, and he went in to an absolute rage. I laughed about that for a long, long time. He was back again next week though.
someone just off a street I am building on has a WW2 tank in front of their house. He is a well known litigator. The HOA sent him a letter. I am sure he is scared.

I lived above a club in Temple Bar, Dublin. Every once in a while we would drink and sprinkle popcorn off the roof and guess who in line for the club would notice popcorn was falling from the sky first. The amount of amusement we got from this was absurd.
I live in a nice quiet suburban neighborhood. I’m guessing someone’s parents were out of town because the night my kids and I camped in the back yard they had a party. If it happens again, and they’re playing the same crappy modern hip hop I’m calling the cops at 10pm.
At the beginning of this year I had been coming home late from work a number of times (circa 12-1am) keen for sleep only to hear a group of teens/20 somethings gathered in the park across the road talking loudly, occasionally yelling, for extended periods of time. I was about 150m away. At least a dozen residences were even closer.
First time I put up with it. Second time I called the cops at 2am, missed what must have been a call-back 15 mins later (presumably to see if the car now assigned to follow it still needed to attend) and they didn’t show up. The noise went on for another 1.5 hours. Then half a dozen of them skated past the house as they left.
Two weeks later what must have been the same group was there again. This time they had daddy’s Merc SUV. Occasionally going for a lap around the park with someone standing out the sun roof etc. When they decided to crank up the ipad playlist at 1:30am it prompted another call to the police. Prior to the cops arriving the driver and another left to get what sounded like (I heard much of the discussion) drugs. The cops rocked up and started questioning them for about 5-10 mins. During this process the car returned with guy out the sunroof but they spotted the cops and drove right by slowly. The music shut down, the cops left and then they decided to call their other two buddies on speaker phone. The night was still so you could hear them clearly talking about how not to come back yet and how close they were to getting busted. 15 mins later the car crawls around the corner and they collect two others that came running out of the darkness. They disappeared and never returned. Obviously realising that perhaps the people in the area weren’t prepared to put up with that shit and there was a very real risk of getting caught with things they might not want to explain to others.
From that point on I realised I had clearly become get off my lawn guy.
This reminds me, I totally forgot about a 3rd floor apartment I had in college right behind a car wash. Sunday mornings in the summer suuuuuucked! There was always someone at the wash cleaning at their car with their car stereo turned up, again, as loud as it can possibly go.
If it happened once I wouldn’t give it much mind but if it happened a second time I’d be calling the police.
Not responding directly to you. I live next to college housing. I get the loud noise and sometimes get pissed off but why would anyone’s first or second instinct be to call the cops. When the new flock of kids come in, if they are being excessively loud, I go talk to them and ask them to turn it down. They always do and it is never a problem after that first meeting.
Sure, the DJ and the homeowner are being dicks but that doesn’t mean you have to be one as well. If it doesn’t stop or continues a different night, by all means, call the cops.
That’s reasonable, but if someone is doing that more than once, they are clearly not concerned about their neighbors’ well-being. If you speak to them first, and then call the cops, they will assume it was you who called the cops, and that could escalate tensions.
So by the second occurrence I think calling the cops is reasonable. They’ll just come and tell him to turn it down, and hopefully problem solved. If you’re going to be a dick, expect to get treated as one.
