Lori Bowden's Carbon X's

Hi all,

Recently while perusing the latest Triathlete mag I noticed a bike photo of Lori Bowden in this years Ironman Hawaii, I noticed that her armrests are mounted directly on the base bar of her Profile Carbon X’s. I thought about doing this myself in the past as I find that I’m not quite low enough when in the aero position and there is a big height difference in my aero extensions and my armrests which usually leads to wrist pain during long rides. Before I try to mod these myself and potentially ruin a brand new set of Carbon X’s has anyone else done this mod and can you share the details with me?

Thanks in advance

Jason

I am modifying mine. Write me off list dan@orcasonline.com

I am interested in this as well, let me know if you figure it out.

Thanks,

Mike

I have done exactly as you describe to a number of client bikes over the years - it’s very easy and works really well.

I use the same bar tuning…

Add to the lower position a weight saving of about 150 grams which means that you will have a carbonx weighting 850 grams :-).

Not that it really matters for this case

Thanks for the info…I will try this over the weekend, it might save me a few hundred bucks since I don’t have to go out and buy the Hed bars now!! One question though, do you use the same bolts that are in the bars currently? If that is the case will they now stick out more though the bottom of the bar? I guess that’s not an issue.

Thanks!!

That wasn´t the problem for me, the bolts are fine and don´t stick out at least enough to get me wondering if i should cut the bolt (about 1mm).

I hate to be dense- but I am also loking to perform this small operation- but I want to know exactly what I am doing- can you give more specic instructions? Pictures? Thanks

send me an e-mail, i will reply with some photos. I think that me and Francois did the same operation on those bars.

I seem to remember you didn’t do it alone, you had some help of a well unknown aero guru
.

I am interested in doing the Profile modification also. When I take everything apart and look at the holes on the pad piece, I notice that they are not wide enough apart to match with the base bar. It also looks like the pad piece starts to curve up where I might want to drill a new hole, which would not work. So ... Are you just enlarging the existing holes or making new ones on the pad?

I have the pad fixed with only one bolt, the other stays below the the aluminium pad.

Enlarged the hole that I needed to fix the pad, a very simple process.

You mean straight bars a la Armstrong, don’t you?

"actually I am fairly sure someone used straight bars before Ullrich as well… "

The Gerolsteiner posse has been using them for a while (Rich, Peschel, Totschnig, Rebellin, etc.). Thurig and Leder are other notable users.

I’ve been experimenting with straight bars myself this season and really like them so far. For me the key was to find elbow rests that can pivot forward (like the Dedas) rather than fixed rests (Jammer GT).

Does anyone have a picture of this setup to post?

Are you using carbon or aluminum mountain bike bars to cut?

What model of Dedas are you referring to in your post? Thanks.

Anybdy still have photos of modified Carbon-X’s? I am thinking of modifying some and would like to make sure I understand what they should look like afterwards. Thanks!
