I recently upgraded my bike from DuraAce 8spd to 9spd. I put on the new derailleur, chain, and cassette and suddenly I have a new noise. After investigating I find that the new cassette does not completely tighten in place. The cogs jingle-jangle like Santa’s sleigh. There is just a slight bit of space between the cogs, as well as the cogs have a little rotational play on the cassette hub body. They are tightened down as far as possible, since the smallest cog doesn’t have the alignment slots all the way through and can only tighten down so far. I am using an Ultegra hub, and never had any trouble with my 8spd cassettes. I guess I need a very thin spacer to take up the slack, but should this happen? I thought the 9spd cassettes were supposed to fit to the 8spd hubs with no problem.
Hi Andrew: Quick reality check, you sound like a pretty good mech, but just to do what I would do… Are you sure everything is on their facing the correct orientation? OK, I know, I’m sorry… Anyway. As my memory serves me I believe there is a thin spacer that goes on the freehub body and the last cog to take up the described slack. Wheels manufacturing makes one as do a number of other guys. Off the top of my head I don’t know the dimension- let me ask one of the men…Oh, the current consensus is 1.5mm but there is some controversy among the men. Anyway, I bet that’s it.
I have had the same syndrom but it was a result of mixing cogs from different cassettes. I was trying to make a reasonable 11/23 from a 12/25 and a 11/21. when I mixed the cogs and spacers they did not stack to enough with. Fortunately, they are all marked so re-assembling them back to the original configuration was easily done.
…it’s a brand new cassette, right out of the box, all put together right. 1.5mm might work, although the space doesn’t look quite that big…I can slip 2 business cards between the cogs. That’s it (and then they are forced together on the opposite side, so that would really be too thick to go all the way around). I’ll check the toolbox and see if I have an old sparkplug gap set. Everything shifts fine, it’s just annoying to have this jingling down there every time I hit the slightest bump. Arrrrrggggghhghghh…
If you cross threaded the lock ring it would feel tight but it would not have done the job.Try another lock ring. The new one might be damaged.
There is a 1mm spacer available, I had the exact same problem and fixed it with one. It only happened on an 8speed Ultegra, switching to 9speed. Check out your local bike shop 1st then call Tom D, or I got mine from John Cobb about 4 years ago. Aloha G (Our LBS had never heard of it or knew how to get one when I showed it to them.)
That happens on some older 8-speed hubs when you upgrade. It is not a big deal. I shimmed a buddies HED wheels with a shim made from a beer can. That worked since it is not a moving part, but it is a pain in the butt to do. I used one of the inner spacers as a template- pkcae the aluminum on top of it and tap it with a small hammer. You may also be able to order one. Making the shim got the job done quickly, which we needed. It is never been changed out since and a year-plus later still works fine.
Jingle jangling cogs are just your bike’s way of saying Merry Christmas!
