Looking for Tri Magazines 1984-1991

I raced from 1984-1991 and was in many Triathlon Magazine articles. Most of the magazines I saved during that time got destroyed and I’m looking for more. If you have Triathlon Magazines that you’d like to get rid of between the years 1984-1991 I am looking for some. I’d like to be able to show my kids. My email is vbirddogs@yahoo.com

Thanks

i’m guessing you’re john devere. welcome to the forum! mark montgomery and i are sitting in my living room, trying to think if there are any john devere stories

your era would include, in the central valley, brian fahrenbach. what other pros were in the central valley?

monty and i both have sets of triathlon magazine, 83 thru 86. i’m certain you’re in there. also, monty has some video of you in world’s toughest in 87 or thereabouts.

That would be me  The only other person that trained in this area was Mike Meteyer. How is Mark doing? Did you guys watch the Amgen Tour at all? It came right through here, and a lot of the course was on roads I trained on for years. The course came right by the school I work at and I drove the golf cart over and watched them come into town.

Anyway, I am looking for some old magazines. My daughter is doing triathlons and I thought she’d get a kick out of seeing some of them. My home email is: johnd_emd@hotmail.com or vbirddogs@yahoo.com

Thanks

John - I’ve copies of Triathlete Magazines from 84-91 - some issues I have two copies. I’ll go through them next week and like you know if I have extra copies with pictures of you in them. Z

mike meteyer, sure. i remember. look, i’ve got a set of triathlon magazines (predecessor to triathlete). so does mark. we’ll leaf through and i’ll scan what i can find about you, and send via email.

what? your daughter doesn’t believe you were once a stud? i remember that tinley, molina, huddle, mcmurdo, durkin, kearns, mcnaughton, de soto, gallagher, et al, were a bit nervous about going up against you, especially in the central valley (bakersfield, bass lake, etc.).

a group of us are coming up to ride loops up to calif hot springs, ponderosa, mountain home state park, in a couple of weeks. why don’t you dust off your 8 speed bike, and callous up your butt between now and then, and come join us for a day?

I’d really appreciate that. My email is in my reply post. Email me and I’ll get you my home address and I can then get yours too so I can pay you for them and for postage.

Thanks again,

John

Dan/Mark,

That would be great if you could find some old stuff for me. Feel free to email me and I’ll get your address so I can send you some money to pay for them. As far as riding, I’m in no shape to go up a hill, little less ride with you studs. Lol Actually, I’m looking for a new bike as I would like to start riding again. You or Mark do any racing these days? I remember Mark did a lot of bike racing.

Hey John, Monty here. I raced pro until 94, then took a break and went back to lifeguard racing and long distance ocean paddling. Dabbled as an AGer in tris for awhile, then went at it hard again in my late 40’s after I had heart surgery(pacemaker). Did ok for awhile, but have had a few setbacks, and just began training a few months ago. Looking foreward to tris again, and I love masters swimming meets, races that are over in the blink of an eye, with lots of downtime to bullshit on the deck with other old relics of the past…

So you are some sort of DR? You sure havent moved too far from home all these years. Good thing you did triathlons, or you would be one of those hicks that says that they have never been farther than 20 miles from where they were born…(-;

Glad you could join us here, we need some old brains to sort through all the undocumented stories that get flung around here…(And I’m the biggers culprit of those stories)

Yup, I’m still pretty close to home. Glad I did all that racing when I was young. It was a fun experience and one I wouldn’t trade. I teach PE here and coach water polo. Just had a kid come back from China last summer on our U.S. team and it was a special time as a coach. He brought his silver medal and gave me a couple shirts from the olympics. Anyway, what was the pacemaker for? You were able to race after that? How’s that all work? My body hasn’t held up very well either. I’ve had three back surgeries. Went to Germany to have two artificial discs put in. And now, I’ve got to have my hips resurfaced. (Don’t want to do the replacement thing). You ever see Tinley? I emailed him once as I know he had the Birmingham Resurfacing done. Read the article/interview you did with Molina. He sure looks healthy and happy with his family. That’s pretty cool.

John
