I think it was the first year he won Hawaii, 2001. He is on the marathon in the lead I believe on his way to victory. His wife is passing him in the other direction waving I think, giving him the “Great job babe.” But there is no expression on his face or even recognition that she is there. Anyone know what I am talking about?
I always thought it was a funny picture yet also the perfect symbol of race day mentality.
I’ve seen this picture but I can’t remember where, for sure. If it was simply in one of the tri magizines, it may be buried in a bin somewhere.
However, there have been a couple really good photo books in the recent past, one by Tinley and one by Competitor Magazine. I don’t have them at my fingertips, but those would be my top possibilities.
Yeah, I believe there is a photo. Thinking about it, it might have been in Triathlete magazine’s coverage of the race. So maybe the November issue of 2001 or 2002?
Oooh, I’d love to see that photo. As a runner DeBoom was always a favorite of mine. I love watching the uber-bikers, but I love watching the runners chase them down even more. I am sure at that point Larsen’s face is saying “There is no way in hell I can stay with this guy.”
Tim Moxey of www.digitaltriathlon.com took that at Wildflower '03. It shows a fantastic study of mental focus/toughness. As I recall Laresn had beasted the bike course and had gone out like a long dog on the run but the picture shows Steve grimacing and looking sideways at Tim knowing that he is powerless to hold him off. By contrast Tim is staring off in the middle distance as though he isn’t even aware for Steve’s existance.
Like all art it is open to interpretation, that’s how I read it. It would be interesting for Steve or Tim to chime in.
all - sorry about the delay here. didn’t realise a question was asked (email me next time and i’ll reply). i dug out an old pic from the series that hasn’t been shown before. deboom was all poise and power when he came past larsen. steve tried to hold him off for as long as possible but tim was awesome and smacked authority on the race. but the moment he passed steve, it was clear tim was stuffed…but it was too late. steve couldn’t see tim’s face and he faded back fast. tim held on round the corner straight onto the downhill and won. if steve had fought back…who knows
hmmm - now how to attach the pics. julian - email me tim@nuundotcom and i’ll email you the pics…you can post if you know how!
No on Jan '02 Triathlete (Kona Issue) - happen to have that one in my coffee table and no photo of the 1 you describe. This weekend’s garage clean-out may uncover the following yr’s coverage.
