Looking for some input on scheduling my final 6 weeks into IMWI

So below is a list of commitments that I have for next August, all that require between 3-7 hours of driving to and from total for each. I am looking to start my taper 2 weeks out from IMWI, which would be August 26th, but that will be dependent mainly on how I feel in the weeks going in. Being self-coached I am searcing for some advice on how to best prepare my workouts around these commitments. Anyone who has had similiar experiences please chime in.

For workouts I want to do 2 big test sessions somewhere around 4 and 8 weeks out to gauge my fitness and see where I am at. The workout in August would take two days and include a 125-135 mile ride, followed by a easy IM pace 3-4 mile run, with a 18ish mile run at race pace the following day. Problem being 4 weeks out would fall on the same date as Rev 3, and moving it forward a weekend could conflict with my sisters wedding, unless I did it on Friday and Saturday. Would that be too close to Rev 3 and doing too much right before my taper, or would that fit in great wih my high volume training right before my taper?

August 4th Good friend from college wedding
August 12th Rev 3 Wisconsin Dells
August 17-18th Final big test workouts 135 mile ride/T-Run IM pace 3-4 mile, Day 2 18ish mile run IM pace.
August 19th Sister’s Wedding (Standing up)
August 25 g/f is maid of honor in wedding so I have no choice
August 26 Taper should start around this date
Sept 9th IMWI

Also if anyone has an experience with doing overdistance bike rides and following them up with brick runs, and a big run the following day would you care to share your experiences with me, or have any comments to how I am approaching mine.

No input on what you should/shouldn’t do on those days, but what times do the weddings start at?
You can get up at 5 am and get done with your longest workout by noon (at the latest).
That’s how us guys with kids do it.
Or make the day of the event your “rest” day. Ride long on Sunday and run long on Monday (before or after work).

Don’t worry so much about over distance on those days… get in quality workouts at or above race effort. Having a consistent plan leading up to that time will pay off too. Think of that time as fine tuning…quality w/ quality rest (sort of hard to do with all those activities, but it’s more important than training a lot and not getting rest)

Here is what I would do:
1-establish the hours I could train (realistcally), daily, during those weeks
2-build the training hours off of that and on the race distance with race specific intensity
3-limit my sim to the one weekend you have free 17-18.

seems you are trying to build a training plan that is going to be really hard to do–and if you try could fail. you’ve created a dream training situation, and are trying to fit it into your life–I think you should consider the opposite–

I’d have my long run mid week, morning before work, on a Tuesday or a Wednesday.

Then, two days after that (thursday or Friday) I’d do a 2-3 hour ride AM before work, with some threshold or tempo stuff.

If Saturday is my travel day, I’d take Saturday off for the weddings + travel and limit drinking. long run on Wednesday AM, 2-3 hour ride with threshold/tempo on Friday. Swim before departing Saturday. Sunday a 3-4 hour ride, no messing around, majority of it tempo, split up into intervals whenever. zone 2 otherwise.

If Friday was the travel day, I’d do my long run on Tuesday, 2-3 hour ride on Thursday and take Friday off for travel with maybe a swim before leaving. Saturday morning would be another ride, 3-4 hours, with a good amount of that at tempo.

on the off days for travel, i’d leave an option to throw in an easy run upon arrival and swim before leaving…

on the way home for travel, I’d ride at the destination site before travel to avoid blowing it off or having to blow it off due to events outside your control that would force you to miss it (car breaking down, accidents, delayed travel, etc…)

just my thoughts—the mega long rides wont happen unless you can take a day off work to do them before the weekend hits.

good luck!

EDIT…final step…whatever you decide, communiate the plan to those close to you well in advance and explain why it’s important you do it, and make sure it fits in their life too!..

Wkd of the 17-18th seems like the real possiblity with training Friday and Saturday, then taking off Sunday completely for the wedding. My only worry is packing in so much in a small time period with racing a HIM the previous Sunday. Also maybe I would do better then with a longer taper? I generally don’t schedule tapers, but more go off how my body is feeling as the date inches forward.

**I’d have my long run mid week, morning before work, on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. **

Tried this, and it worked well this year. I plan on doing all my long runs mid-week on fresher legs, but I want these two big “test” workouts to have long runs backup that long bike. However you are right and I may be overshooting myself here. Maybe it would be best to eliminate the T-Run after the ride, or simply move the long run to another day in the week on those two specific workouts.

Fortunately for me this is completely possible. Right now my job is very flexible and I can, at times, pick the days that I work.

on the way home for travel, I’d ride at the destination site before travel to avoid blowing it off or having to blow it off due to events outside your control that would force you to miss it (car breaking down, accidents, delayed travel, etc…)

Noted, great point as well.

Some great input ideas here. If I didn’t mention earlier my schedule outside of these commitments is more flexible then others. But I am now planning around other commitments and am doing the best to recognize those and not let it diminish my training, or my attendence at these events. Thanks for the input and any other ideas are welcome.

All depends what your goals really are. FYI, I’m self-coached and seem to deal w/ this regularly, especially now being in the military. Thinking outside the box, I would bag Rev 3 WIDells altogether and do your test set that weekend. Back up a few weeks and do 1 of the following 1/2 IM’s assuming you live in Madison, not Lacrosse (better if in Lacrosse):
1-Chisago Lakes Tri, Sun 7/22/12, Chisago City, MN, north of Twin Cities, 5:06 drive, 1/2 IM, 7 weeks out from IMWI
2-Waseca Tri, Sun 7/29/12, past Lacrosse and Rochester but before Mankato, 4:40 drive, approx. 1/3 IM, not ideal, but quick recovery, 6 weeks out from IMWI

Personally, I like a test race, ideally a 1/2, about 6 weeks from my peak IM. That gives me 1 week to recover, 3 weeks to drive the final training home, and then a 2 week taper. This worked to perfection for me in 2010 from Augusta 70.3 to IMFL (8:54). This year only option was Santa Barbara (about 1/3 IM) before Kona and everything felt good until race day sickness and a 9:42.

Let’s say you do Chisago 7 weeks out. Good 5 days EZ recovery. Then the following:
July 28-29: hit it pretty good, but not overkill
August 4th Good friend from college wedding: get 1 good workout around this event (i.e. long run OR bike) and a shorter opposite
August 11-12 !!!Test training weekend!!!
August 18-19 Sister’s Wedding (Standing up): again same as 2 weeks ago but even bigger/better
August 25 g/f is maid of honor in wedding so I have no choice: gotta get your last reasonably long of both this weekend
August 27 Taper should start around this date
Sept 9th IMWI

This gives you a solid 2 week taper. More than anything, DO NOT overtrain yourself into the ground between driving, partying, training, etc. When pressed for time: do shorter quality stuff vs. nothing. Also, try being creative w/ how you get some of the key session done. For a family road trip, I’ve started long runs super early, run 20 miles, and my wife picks me up 2:40 later. Have done the same w/ getting long bike rides in by being dropped off heading into a destination.

Most importantly, get in some great base training in June and early/mid July to really set you up for success. You never know how all that “stuff” will pan out in August, plus, WI weather could throw you a nice curve ball too AND you really start losing daylight.

You want Kona? Lay the ground work early season, be a master of managing your time during the busy period, and stay on top of your health. You’ll get there if done wisely. May take a few more tries, but this would be a big step in the right direction.

BTW, I was a Madison boy for many yrs. About the 3rd triathlete in town:)

PM if you want to chat more.

I did IMWI 2007 and 09… and just qualified for hawaii at IMFL 2011…personally, i would think about doing a 3 or 4 week taper. i do a 5 week taper…instead of doing a lot of volume in the last 3 or 4 weeks, i would shift my focus to race simulated brick workouts…
