Looking for a group ride in Hollywood CA

I just moved to LA and I am looking for a good tri club/ group ride to join. I am living in Hollywood/Studio City and would like somewhere close by. Does anyone have any recomendations? Thanks, Erik

There are many studios near there that offer group rides if you can “measure up”…if you know what I mean. Most require you to arrive with a doctors note showing a clean bill of health.

check Velo club lagrange
.

Did he mean bike ride?

LOL. He is in Hollywod, for those types of rides, you need to go the Valley…I know as I grew up there!

Good luck out there !

I was born and raised in Pasadena, so if I were you, it might be easier and more pleasant for you to drive out to the Rose Bowl where there’s some good riding thats a lot safer. The climb to Lida St towards the Art Center College of Design is very cool w/ some great views of the Valley., thats if their not having a Stage 3 smog alert…LOL!

There’s also the Pasadena Tri club and if you stop by Velo ( I think ) Cycles on Colorado Blvd, they can steer you to some other groups.

Plus there’s an awesome pool out by the Rose Bowl too… as well as some killer post-ride eats like Pie&Burger near the CalTech campus and Continental Burger on Lake Ave.

Did he mean bike ride?

You’re sick Record… Yes, bike rides, I was really hoping for small small groups around me that I could join up with , In Miami I had a group of six that everyday at least 2 or 3 would be riding so I knew I wouldn’t go solo.

… thats if their not having a Stage 3 smog alert…LOL! …
So you were the cause of the Stage 3 smog alerts!

I cannot remember the last time we had a smog alert. The air in Los Angeles is much better than when I was growing up. The only time we have a problem now is if there are brush fires in the area. Other than the fires, air in Los Angeles is cleaner now.

Erik,

Welcome to the “hood”. I know you’ll find some really good climbing around here especially compared to Miami. Clearly Hwood has some pretty uninterrupted density around it but there are some options nearby.

I know the West Side the best so I’ll start there…VeloClublagrange has some great morning “roadie” rides leaving from 26th and San Vicente in Brentwood at 6:30 Tuesday-Friday. Tuesday is sprints around Marina Del Rey, Wednesday is a steady, moderate TT climb up Mandeville Canyon, Thursday is really good: 4 hilly loops around the Santa Monica area with good intensity and recovery. Friday is a very light easy ride again around Marina Del Rey. Saturday they ride from Ocean and San Vicente around 8pm to go north in Malibu - mileage varies. Sunday ride might interest you as it starts in West LA at La Grange and Westwood blvd and goes…dare I say it…east through Century City, through boys town, into Hwood and up Nichols Canyon to Mulholland and then races back across the ridge of Mullholand to the 405 fwy, then down to Brentwood and scatters.

There LA Tri Club is big and strong and has folks riding in Griffith Park, Angeles Crest Hwy (up, up, up). The Rosebowl’s been mentioned and it used to have a weekday evening crit type ride that was strong but got severely shut down by a recent Pasadena City Council - I’ll be surprised if it continues.

In the end I can tell you that Malibu has WORLD CLASS cycling with long climbs, expanses of empty roads, and great weather/views. Generlay we build loops that start on PCH near Santa Monica and head north into Malibu - the we climb something of merit: Latigo, Encinal, Mulholland, Yerba Buena, Deer Creek and come back towards “town” on Mulholland - then back over Topanga to get back to starting point. There’s just some great riding to be had.

PM if you need more info. See you on the road soon, Ian

Wow!! Thanks Ian, thats exactly what I was looking for. I think I wil start with the W LA ride as it goes right by my house (Woodrow Wilson/Nichols Cyn) and I know I can handle that. What time does that start? Then I’ll probably try Griffith park, then maybe I’l try and hang with you guys going up the canyons in Malibu, but I definately need to work on my climbing, the biggest hill we had in Miami was the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge!! Thanks again, I will PM yoou with my info and maybe I can hook up with your group soon. E

good luck thinking the la grange sunday is an easy ride to hold onto the group. Its doable but never, ever easy. start climbing now and in a few years you may start lining up with the first group for the sprint if you have the nuts

Hey muffin, what time does that ride start? Are you a regular? I never go into a ride thinking it is easy, but I will do my damndest to try and keep up!!

yea, sunday Lagrange is FAST.

I was “off the front” a bit my first ever try on that ride and missed that right up the “wall” to Mulholland…bad move!

Kurt

what time does that start? I am going to give it a go next Sunday. When you say fast, are you talking 25+ avg??? I can keep up between 22-24 for a while…

If I remember right it starts at 7 or 8. if you go to the la grange website and look at the ride list the details are there. the speed isnt the real trouble with the ride its the constant climbing up steep grades to start and then hard rolling hills
