Looking for a good tri-helmet option

Looking for a good tri helmet option without breaking bank. How much speed is actually gained with an aero helmet vs standard race helmet? I will be doing mostly Sprint/Olympics in 2012, but am looking to work up to a half in the fall.

Need to buy a new one either way b/c my road helmet has a visor which i cant remove and limits my vision in the aero position.

Thoughts???

around about 30 seconds per 40k usually , but it depends on your position and which helmets in question.

things to look at:
do you want a visor? is one available or included with the helmet?

are you paranoid about heat? does it have vents? vents make a helmet slower, but you can tape them over on cold days too.

does it fit your body nicely? does the tail rest against your back?

of course it should fit well too. best bet it find a shop that will let you try a couple on with your bike on a trainer.

there are good helmets in the $160 range

see my sig for more info

I have the Rudy Project Wingspan TT. Interesting design with its shorter tail that sticks up in back but it is said to be the fstest helmet out there by Cobb.

Yes, get one. Rudy Project Wingspan. Best one out there on many levels.

Of course Cobb is going to say it’s the fastest, he helped design it.

I wish Rudy made their helmet in a larger size though! The sizing is a limiting factor for those of us with extra large craniums, of course we do create quite the draft zone

+1

UVEX and LAZER aero helmets on bonktown from time to time for $80.

Cant use Rudy if you actually have normal (large) head.

I have LG Supperleggera. Light, very cool (temp). Very different then the Giro in that LG comes with a little bit more space around ears vs. tight around ears Giro.

I think i paid $160ish.

I have the Spiuk Kronos and I really like it. Some people are paranoid about the lack of vents but I ride in south/central Florida during the 95 degrees days in the sun and I have never had any issues being overheated or even too warm. I would suggest it to anyone who can make the long tail fit with their back.

Awesome, thank you for all the responses. I am in the Northeast, so I am not too worries about overheating very often.
