I am looking for a 70.3 distance in mid july 2012 as my warm up for an ironman in august. Anyone have any suggestions? I live in NY and would like something that is a drivable distance. I am thinking about doing the Providence 70.3, but many people do not have positive comments about it. Does anyone know if the current bike course that is up now, if it is the same as the past? And any chance the swim will be moved back to the ocean?
I highly recommend the Musselman tri in Geneva, NY. It is an incredibly well run race on a fantastic course.
I’ve done Muncie the past 2 years, it is a great course.
Why not just focus on your IM training and do a local Olympic or Sprint? You’ll recover faster and be able to focus on transitions. If you are looking at doing bricks, just do them on your own and save your money
Or if you do a 70.3, do it slower than race pace. No need to worry about injuring yourself. Focus on transitions and go through the motions. Plus you’ll save money in race entries, gas money, hotel, and food. That’s like $400 right there. Do a local race and spend at most $100 and support your local folks?
Or if you do a 70.3 I think most people would recommend doing it in April or May or at the latest early June. That way you don’t waste training and recovery time. And that should be a good enough warm up so that you can get a good benchmark and know what you have to work on.
Good luck and have fun!

x2 on Musselman. Jeff H does a great job organizing this race.
Thanks everyone on the input. Musselman looks nice, maybe will consider that one.
