Why 2x?
I have an Open Wi.de and it’s my second favorite bike. Tons of tire clearance and rides like a road bike when you want to.

The open wi.de is decent, but even it only has space for 46mm tires on 700C wheels. I was hoping for more (space for bigger tires and, more important, space for more mud clearance).
I like 2x because it allows a bit wider gearing range while still offering better (smaller) spacing between gears. You also don’t need to use extreme chain angles as one typically has to on 1x set ups.
Since this originally popped up two years ago, the Canyon Grizl became a solid choice. It meets your 2x requirements and Pete Stetina is using 2.1" tires with a 50/34 crankset on his. If he survived Cheq40 last weekend on it, I think that speaks a lot to the capability.

The canyon grizl looks great.
But, not available as a frameset …
Otso is a great Minnesota company. Everyone raves about the Voytek, which is a standout bike for the long tough winter races like Arrowhead 135. I love my Open Up, and have a Voytek on the way for my winter fattie.
I built what you are looking for using a generic chinese carbon frame for mtb. I needed 700x2.2 clearance for sand, not mud but then I started riding it on the road when I climb high mountains (over 8,000 feet) because the roads are bad and there are a lot of expansion cracks. It is super comfortable I had a fork that could handled a 700x2.2 tire but went back to a cross fork that would take a 46mm tire because I found that enough.
I recently rode it up Mauna Kea in Hawaii without a bike change for the gravel. The chinese carbon frame has been very good and it cost $500.

1x13 range on this works really well (I was a firm 2x GRX Di2 only prior to the OPEN WI.DE).
Have had Maxxix Rambler 45s on it with room to spare.
The Evil Chamois Hagar is a pretty slack design. Could be a handful on slow climbs.

If you are willing to go steel or Ti (I know not your desired requirements) the Chumba Terlingua is a great boutique choice . Can’t speak highly enough of my steel one.

That is a great looking bike! (And a very tall top tube pack.)
Do you think your Open Wide would fit 50mm (700C ) tires on it?

Thanks and yes that pack fails on aero compared to yours ; )
Tried a Rene Herse Oracle Ridge 48 and that was too tight. That would rule out a 50.
Fair # of bikes that’ll clear a 50 but all are 1x

Your top tube pack is cool, kinda makes your bike look like a bison.
It is interesting, you’re right that carbon gravel 2x bikes that fit 700C 50mm wide tires are rare. But somehow Niner and Otso manage it. What is the secret?

Otso uses to the adj rear dropout (larger tires require the longer/rearward setting). Niner stays are 430 and combined with seattube angle must be enough to clear the 50 and a 2x?
I know a few people who have cuthroats and Otsos.
Cuthroat, I don’t know if it can be 2x, it isn’t sold as a 2x for sure. It is also a more ‘adventure’ bike. So don’t plan on being in racing position, more like hybrid bike position and long haul riding.
Otso, I know a dealer and a few people who have bought them from him. I haven’t heard a single bad thing.
The new felt breed carbon looks like it can as well. I know my breed aluminum can just fine, although there are other differences in the frames.
May be hard to get your hands on one though.

The Cutthroat has been 2x since the very beginning, as well as 1x. I currently ride one setup with 2x Di2 and will be attempting the Arkansas High Country (short loop - 500 miles) in a couple of weeks.

Ah, good to know. Every time I looked at one or saw someone with one it was always 1x.
