Look style pedel vs. SPD style

Currently I am using the old SPD style pedals on my road bike and my tri bike. I am considering switching to Look style pedals, but they cost quite a bit more (as far as I can tell).

Are there any big advantages of one style over the other that makes the cost justifiable? One thing that does appeal to me on the look style pedal is that the cleat appears to be more securely attached to the shoe.

I went from SPD to Look to Speedplay then back to Look. I like Look because of the surface area you have but you still have some play in the cleat. SPD were to confining and I had some knee problems. Speedplays were too small of a surface and too much play. gave me hot spots. Therefore, Looks were just right.

I have heard good things about the Shimano clipless. I don’t know the actual style name but I think it is what Lance Armstrong rides. I have several friends that use them and love them.

hope this helps

spd-sl . awesome. easy to clip in without looking.

i am also using my old spd pedals from my mt bike on my tri bike and have for 5 years (ever since i got into triathlon). i asked john cobb if he thought new pedals would make any difference several years ago at a fitting clinic and he told me to save my money.

I disagree . Maybe it doesn’t matter once you’re clipped in and riding , but I find the spd-sl’s so much easier to get in and out of when out on a training ride.

and if we get those stand down penalties, that could be a consideration:-)

I just got into the SPD-SL about a month ago from Time ATAC, which are EASY to get into and out of. I wish the Time peddles had as much ‘lift’ to them when on the upswing like the SPD-SLs, which do. SPDs are a bit more delicate to enter, but once you’re in, you’re in and rockin’. I keep the Time’s for my mtn bike and a road bike because they are sooo easy to get into and out of. It is a super peddle if you’re not clipped in already during transition too.
