Look pedal recall

Look recalling 40,000 pairs of pedals purchased between 1/04 and 7/07

My Classics were made during the recall period. I wonder if they’ll be completely replacing the pedals; the notice says “return them to the place of purchase, or contact Look Cycle USA to arrange for shipping and free repair.”

Also likely that you’ll be out a set of pedals for a while too, regardless if repair or replacement. I happen to have 3 pair. I may send them back one at a time so I have something to ride.

I’m still running a pair that I bought in 1989. Any of those recalled?

Thanks for posting. Here is a link to some better info on the Look USA website.

“If your pedals were manufactured between January 2004 and December 2005, stop using them immediately. Bring them to your nearest Authorized Keo Axle Replacement Dealer, where the axles will be upgraded free of charge.”

It looks like just about every bike shop in my area is an “Authorized Keo Axle Replacement Dealer” so this shouldn’t be too bad.

I do have the bike in the car right now for the weekly group ride and no spare pedals with me (who would) so I’m sure I will be hearing lots of creaks and cracks tonight . . . .

The pedals are being voluntarily recalled, even though the failure rate does not meet CPSC’s requirement for recall. The failure rate on the axles was something like 0.01%. I believe it was less than 5 sets that failed can’t remember the exact number, I know it was less than 10. That is out of 40,000 pairs sold.

There are a lot of recall centers set up, you can find them on www.lookcycle-usa.com, where axles have been prestaged to process the exchange. These were Keo pedals that were made in 2004 and 2005. You can find the date your pedals were manufactured on the bottom of the pedal. It is a small circle of numbers, 1-12, and then a number in the middle. The number in the middle is the year, an arrow points to the month (that is the 1-12 numbers).

If you are riding these pedals, there is a very small change the axle could fail, and Look is replacing the axles for free, so take advantage of it. Any bike shop can do it, but the ones on the list have the axles prestaged to avoid having to be without your pedals for an extended period of time.
