Long swim at Ohio 70.3?

I am trying to make sense of an unusually slow swim result from Ironman 70.3 Ohio this weekend.
I have plenty of open water swim experience and I felt like I sighted well and did not veer off course, yet that is not what my Garmin 920XT recorded.
Did anyone else measure the course as being longer than 1.2? I hope my watch isn’t jacked up.

I recorded 2204 yards, which is right above 2000 meters. In looking at the file, I swam very straight on the buoy line, surprisingly. So it was probably 80-100 meters long.

Edit: I’d assume it was definitely long. I expected to be 4-5 minutes down to the first out of the water and expected 32:30 or around there. I swam 34:40 something and was 5 minutes down.

2112 yds is 1.2 mi. You recorded less than 100 yd diff. (It may have been < 100 yds “long”…assuming you swam the perfect line).

I’ve seen a friends Garmin file and it said 2283 yards

OMG GUYS THIS 140.6 MILE RACE WAS 200 YARDS OVER DISTANCE

Give me a break

Not sure anyone is complaining, just asked if it was slightly long. According to what I recorded and another recorded, it was slightly long. Also, it was a 70.3 mile race.

My apologies. So instead of being .00078% too long, it’s .0016%. My bad, guys.

My Garmin had 2248 yds, so not substantially long. That said, I was about 4-5 minutes slower than I thought I would be. I think the sun in the middle 800 m led me to sight more. I ended up swimming a pretty straight line but didn’t trust myself.

Not complaining, just trying to analyze results and understand/evaluate performance.

No garmin file for me, but based on times I thought it was maybe a little long. I was several minutes slower than my last half iron. Looking at the results of the top 20 overall, there was only one person who broke 30 min, so that seems a bit slower than what I what expect for the FOP. I seem to remember people saying they thought the swim was long last year as well.

My apologies. So instead of being .00078% too long, it’s .0016%. My bad, guys. It’s almost like somebody might want to know if the 2.5 - 3 min delta between expected/actual comes as a result of something they can improve on (training/sighting/pacing/etc.) or variables out of their control! Or that the .0016% difference in distance is more like a 1%+ difference in time!

If you use Strava you can search activities to view other GPS results.

If on a PC, log into Strava then at top click Explore then on the drop down click Activity Search. Then in the City, State box type in Delaware, OH. Below that in the Keywords box type 70.3 swim. You’ll get a list of a bunch of swims from the race. Some of them might be from previous years. Most of them show 1.2 miles but if you click on the 1.2, it will bring up the summary of that persons swim where you can see the yardage as well as other data such as the GPS device used.

I use Strava to look at bike and run elevation profiles as well. Since I use a Garmin 920XT I’ll look at profiles where the same device was used. Nice tool.

I got 2195 on my garmin. Seemed about right to me. I held pretty good lines but did have to swim around a couple groups of slower swimmers, so it makes sense to me. I finished in 30:12 which put me at just north of 1:20/100yd and that’s about what it felt like. So I’d call it accurate.

The bike was dead on at 56 for me too.

The run though…I recorded 13.2 miles and saw a number of other people on Strava that did the same.

That is something I didn’t think of…super helpful idea…thanks!
