Long Run Days - Morning Meals

Whadaya eat before an AM long run? Like 2.5 hours+? I’m doing about a cup of oatmeal and berries with some whey isolate, about 1.5 hours before… Any other ideas? I’ve been told that may be a wee high on the fiber side but it hasn’t caused me any problems as of yet…

2 peanut butter and jam sandwiches and about 250 ml of Gatorade.

I just did my long run today after eating at a Mexican restaurant. Things went surprisingly well down there!

You may want to go with someone else’s advice though…

Half of a powerbar and a coke works well for me.

nada.

My new super breakfast is 2/3 cup (dry) quick oats, then adding about 1/4 cup of dried cranberries and cover with cinnamon and 2 packets of splenda. Delicious! Works well before all of my workouts. Haven’t had a problem.

Funny you ask this today cause I was facing the same question this morning before my long run. I went for two big bowls of Cheerios with few milk just 1 hour before heading out and felt great.

I eat the same as any other day. Most days I have a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey on it, glass of OJ, and cup or two of coffee. Occasionally on long runs days I’ll have a bit more for supper the night before. That way there is something in me, but I’m not all bloated before I start.

I typically don’t eat anything, just take some nuun, Fortune Delight (antioxidant tea), or Gatorade-type product with me. Not ideal I know, but with everything else going on in my life, I typically find that when a window of opportunity opens up to take a longer run, I often get short notice. So, if I have the chance, I take and will deal with the nutrition after the fact…like a good protein/carb shake after the run.

@ peanut butter sourdough english muffins and wash it down with a sports drink.

All great options! I guess I’ll keep doing what I do as it works for me and seems like everyone tends to be pretty different! Thanks for the other options though!

Oatmeal, just like you. About 300 calories. I usually eat just one hour before I head out, as I don’t like doing any workout for 2+ hours on an empty stomach. When I am in better shape, I can run at long run/‘E’/ IM pace with food in my belly and it causes me no problems.

Multi-grain bagel, sometimes with PB and Honey, sometimes plain, sometimes with Nutella - depends on my mood. Usually about 1/2 hour before and with some water.

I go with raw oats (Old Wessex 5-grain cereal to be exact) with a mashed up banana and a big spoonful of
Better N’ Peanut Butter.

If I run in the Am its 1 or 2 kashi waffles with nutella and natural P butter an hour before or so, oh and of course, COFFEE . In the afternoon I generaly eat nothing a couple hours before.

daily pre-workout b’fast:

oatmeal + brown sugar + raisins + splash of milk.

1/2 a bagel.

and a shot of OJ.

Bizzy, what’s with the lame poser “sit around for 1.5 hour program”. You’re doing an Ironman…you better get used to running with a full stomach…get up, down your oats and then head out to run 30 minutes later!

I’ve usually only been awake around 5-10 mins before I start long AM runs…

maybe a banana, maybe nothing if its less than about 1hr 1/2…but i have a gel every 45mins on the run if it;s going to be longer than about 90mins.

cup of tea with some sugar in it or a pepsi, maybe a gel. Dude it’s only 2.5hr you don’t need a full meal. eat a good dinner the night before and take a few gels with you.
