Anyone used InfinIT’s products with success over the offerings of Hammer nutrition, i.e., Sustained Energy or Perpetuem?
I have used both. Both are great products, but I have to say that InfinIt is amazing. It is a totally individualized product which makes it very efficient, esp. when it comes to IM racing.
i’ve tried them all and i’ve had equal, if not greater success simply using gatorade and gu in an ironman (as per my old coach, don fink). and because they’re at every aid station it makes race day nutrition easy plus it’s relatively cheap to train with.
RGRTRI,
I have used both products. I used Perpetuem at IMAZ & was happy with it, but probably didn’t take enough endurolyte pills. I regularly train with all the hammer products & especially like HEED. I have recently tried Infinit & love the lemon lime flavor. I used Infinit exculsively at the CaliMan HIM last weekend. I mixed a bike bottle with 900 cals & took water from the aid stations. I had a flask I carried with about 300 cals & again took water at the aid stations. I used one hammer gel to get me to the finish. It worked very well. This is my plan for the future. I like the taste the best even when it is mixed strong. My formula has about 310 cals, 435 mg sodium & a little protein per serving. Hope this helps. I am a big fan of the Hammer products, but I enjoy Infinit on raceday.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Given my season is over, I’m tempted to try something new for next year and for IMAZ in '06. I’ve been a long-time Hammer convert but like many, I’ve lost the palate for SE and Perpetuem. I stumbled on the InfinIT website and thought I’d inquire amongst the ST bretheren.
“I’ve lost the palate…”
Sounds familiar. Two years ago I was a big-time user of both Pepetuem and HEED. I kind of lost the palate for Perp. last season, and then HEED this season – until I learned the “trick” of combining HEED with Sustained Energy. I mix this in a 2-1 or 3-1.5 S.E./HEED ratio, depending. This worked really well for me recently at The Canadian iron distance, and it’s given new life to HEED for me. Plus, S.E. substitutes pretty nicely for Perpetuem, although I also used Perp. in a flask during the run at The Canadian.
Earlier in the season I tried several times to call infinIT, as I was going to give it a good try in preparation for the iron, but I just got the answering machine. I will probably keep trying to phone and hope to talk to someone once my season is over, but for now I’m very happy with the S.E./HEED combo.

Steve, i have started using InfinIT since the beginning of 05. Absolutely love it especially for half and full IM races. Mike Folan is the gentleman to talk to at InfinIT. He is very prompt in replying emails and enquiries. I fire him an email and he would respond within a day. Try this email “contactus@infinitnutrition.com”. Best of luck…
Thanks, IM, I will try this very soon. I really just wanted to ask some questions and have a meaningful dialogue, but that probably isn’t necessary. The e-mail process should do just fine. It’s helpful to have Mike’s name as a contact. Much obliged!
I like using real food. Stuff like Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwiches, bananas and granola bars. This is what I exclusively use in training. For fluid, I use 2 scoops of gatorade with half to full teaspoon of table salt. That’s it. I hate spending a fortune on “designer nutrition” in training. I only use stuff from the grocery store in training. If I can buy the food in a bike store, then I am not training with it ![]()
For half Ironmans, I just go with 5-6 gels, and a powerbar (they work better in races than granola bars cause I can stick them to my top tube) and 2 bottles of gatorade with salt. For Ironman, I use a mix of PB&Jam sandwiches, granola bars, powerbars, gels, bananas, salt pills, and whatever else they are serving up at aid stations.
I think people get too caught up on one magic nutrition formula for race day especially for the non podium guys. Being flexible is key. For Ironman, it is a long day and variety is nice (just like you would on a normal day). Ironman is about the guy who slows down the least while having lunch and a day worth of snacks on the fly. I like some variety in my day. I find it is good mentally.
Perhaps I could do better speed wise with a more scientific nutrition plan. I stive to do three things with my nutrition:
-
Take in at least >300 calories per hour
-
Maintain my sodium/electrolyte balance
-
Keep me mentally sane
I know I might be better off trying some magic bullet formula. That will be the research project for the off season.
Yup - Mike is the man. They make the stuff right down the road from my house (where else but Cincy). You will be happy with the stuff and after doing the math, costs about the same as gatorade and endurolyte/salt tabs.
Steve
SHHHHHHHHHH! that was our (D3) secret recipe! Sheesh! Now, all those guys in your AG just caught up with you. Well, I guess you are going to have train harder than them again… ![]()
Mike
I’m all about Hammer Nutrition, but no offense guys and gals if you mix and match your electrolytes and don’t give a crap about how exacting your protein is (most people don’t seem to really know) they end up being the same product with Hammer just being a little easier to get your hands on. Basically it boils down to flavor and convenience.
Mike -
I apologize, but will blame my lapse in judgment on the effects of A.L. pennant/wild-card race. The past ten days have deranged me to a farethewell, although since last night I’m feeling MUCH better. I’m cautiously optimistic about full recovery by next Sunday evening - if not slightly sooner!
After chasing the bonk, cramp, drag your ass across the finish line bug, I found that
using Infinit is a real blessing. I don’t cramp, or go thru that lul in energy that you usually go thru during 70-80 miles on the bike. Its like waking up and finding out that you did marry the home coming Queen and she’s rich. Wow! What a feeling.
Mike Folan is the man to talk to. He can answer any nutrition question.
I am not employed or related to Folan or his wife.![]()

I really like InfinIT and also use Extran. Perpetuem, HEED and SE taste disgusting to me. For electrolytes, I prefer NUUN in my front aero bottle of water to trying to choke down some pills.

To all:
Did anyone start with some of their “baseline” formulas or did you each take the time to research your ideal blend?
Started with my own just by going through the questions. I’ll tweak it slightly on the next order, but the first batch worked really well.

I’m like you, I keep my nutrition very simple. Gatorade, water, and Powerbars on the bike. Maybe a few fig newtons. On the run, cola and gatorade. In the heat of hawaii I eat less solid food on the bike and replace it with 6-8 gels. That’s it, works for me. I might add, I have no way of knowing this for sure, but I don’t think a lot of triathletes carbo load enough. I load up (massively) for 3 days for a race like Hawaii. I know of one top pro who I talked with before Hawaii last year that did not carbo load at all. He said with his training he was essentially carbo loading all the time. He did not finish.
I used InfinIT during a race and was really pleased with it. The flavor is great. Sits really well in the stomach. And that is just their generic race mix. I plan to experiment this winter to nail down my own “mix.” I think Hammer HEED is pretty awful tasting, but it works okay. Same for Perpetuem. I think InfinIT is a really revolutionary product.
