After experiencing some GI problems on the run course at LP, I’ve decided that I won’t be using what’s offered on course anymore unless it’s Infinit. I used to be able to handle anything, but not anymore. So, I’m trying to figure out how to get the nutrition/electrolytes that I need on the run. My 2 options seem to be:
Carry Inifit with me
Just stick to water and coke and use salt tabs for electrolytes
I’m not thrilled with the thought of dragging a bottle of Infinit with me, but I’m also not sure I can get what I need from salt tabs alone.
What do you do if you can’t use the on course sport drink?
While you cannot use the offered drink, what about the gels that were offered?
Gels + water + Coke should cover most of it (since now those gels have 200 mg of sodium in it?
Calories - gel and coke (easy to take some gels in the wrappers or a flask and get more on course or at special needs - they can be put in your shorts or top).
Salt - get from the gel and supplement with salt tabs.
Water - got to drink water with all of the above. Infinit works because it is the right concentration. You need to drink enough (or more) water to keep the concentration in your gut to a similiar level that you do with Infinit.
I rarely if ever use on course sport drink. Never worked for me.
Good points about the gels. Thanks to both of you. I didn’t even consider that because I got pretty sick of gels during my marathon training and racing. I guess I should try them out again.
I’ve just started using Infinit and here’s what I have planned for IM Canada:
On the bike concentrated Infinit - for first 120 km, one bottle with four servings in it. That means I will drink a quarter of the bottle approx every hour and chase with water I pick up at aid stations. At special needs (at 120km at IMC) I’ll pick up two premixed bottles of Infinit (regular strength) and drink one per hour. Hopefully I’m finished the bike in six hours.
On the run - I will use a Fuel Belt with four flasks - each flask will have one serving of concentrated Infinit in it. I’ll use one flask per hour and chase with water at aid stations. If my run goes much over four hours I’ll start using gels from the aid stations.
I’ve been practicing this in training and it seems to work.
Hmmm…interesting. I hadn’t thought of concentrated Infinit on the run either. I use it concentrated on the bike (6 scoops per bottle), but never tried it on the run. Thanks.
