Going to be doing St. Croix, so I’ve heard I should be going with a 12-27 cassette. Will it matter if I use a short cage / long cage rear der? Whats the difference anyways? I’ve never had a granny gear (25<) on the wheel and was hoping just to use the regular(short cage = regular right) rear der.
Long cage is typically paired with a triple crank to wrap up the extra chain when you use the granny ring. Short cage is sufficient for most road double gearing including 53/39 and 12-27.
I rode St. Croix with a 53/39 + 12/27 cassette and a short-cage (standard) derrailleur.
Shimano only makes regular & long.
I believe Campy makes short/reg/long. Short is only for 11-21 I believe, reg is for everything else, and long is only for 13-29.
Long is also required for a triple up front, or if you make the Slowman 11-27, and might be a good idea if you run something like an 11-27 and a 55/39 or something like that.
