I read Lone Survivor last year and had some problems with the tone of the book, mainly too much GWBush nut-hugging and right wing rhetoric (even though I consider myself a conservative).
I wanted to see what people thought of Bravo Two Zero? Was the action at least as good as Lone Survivor. From what I’ve seen on the interwebs a lot of the story has been “embellished” but I’m not really reading it for accuracy I’m just looking for a good HTFU story.
You could try “not a good day to die” i think thats the name of it. talks about the beginning of the afghan war…written by a cia dude…good book…
I liked lone survivor. give the author a break, he is a Tx boy, of course he is not going to bad mouth his commander in chief…Story is, when he went to see the hollywood types about turning his book into a movie, he called a halt to the talks because they wanted to make him and his buddies a victim of GW’s war on terror…
i heard an interview/podcast with luttrell at http://www.pritzkermilitarylibrary.org/podcasts/index.jsp
this was after his book had been out at least a year, and it did not have the same tone, which you mention and i am finding right now as i read the book. much more matter of fact, very interesting to listen to. i have not read the other book you mention. I will say that in reading lone survivor, and their dilemna with the goat herders, i was reminded of Slow walk in a sad ain. can’t recall the author, but green beret in vietnam who faced a similar situation, and made the opposite decision.
I read Bravo Two Zero a few years ago now but it’s a pretty amazing story and I remember thinking it was pretty good (I haven’t read anything much of that style though so how it ranks I can’t help you). Can’t remember any political tones but its possible that I either forgot them or was tuning them out.
Love Survivor is an exciting book, but what makes the book for me is the patriotism that Marcus Latrell and the Navy Seals show. Side note another awesome book is Black Hawk Down.
I thought B2Z was a great read. A lot of action mixed with some good Brit humor. McNabb is a pretty good writer, check follow-up to B2Z, Immediate Action, it is about his life pre-Desert Storm and how he made his way to the SAS. As an aside, one of the guys on the team in B2Z, Chris Ryan, wrote a book called the One That Got Away, which if you read bravo, should be very interesting. I have not read that yet.
