London triathlon 2005

Some of my friends want to go to London triathlon next year, but I understand this is a race that fills up pretty quick? any tricks you can share on how to asure that 5-10 MOP/BOP reach the starting line?

i think a high proportion of the places go to official charities

if you don’t get a place you could try one:

.

London is a great Tri. I did London last year in the sub 2:30 cat. There are more places in this cat! You need to qualify with an OLY at SUB 2:30. The nice thing is you don’t race the normal AG route BUT race into central London with closed roads and turn at Big Ben! (Elte race too)
The course is fast and flat! (Apart from a few man-hole covers!)

This I think is your best bet! There were about 150 in this cat last year.

I did it last year for the first time and am racing there again at the end of July. You’ll have no trouble entering as long as you register before the ‘cut-off’ date which is published somewhere on the website:

After this date, you get stuck in a ballot. A few of the guys from here got in that way, so you may get lucky if you leave it late. BTW, to get in the sub 2:30 category you need to have two races within that time, rather than one.

hey pmp, i am doing the sub230 race this year! I basically had to do it because I missed the cut-off for the AG race and wanted to be sure of a spot so I could make my plans. My oly time on flat-ish courses is around 2:20. Am I going to be hugely out of my league? I worry that I’ll be lining up with tons of wanna-be-pros and will be dropped from the get go…

Depends what the course was like when you set the 2:20 time. London is fast! Not the fastest but it is a fast course. I actually did it for fun and was not my A race for the season last year but I came out of the water in the 1st group and decided to put the hammer down on the bike… the bike course is very very nice and fast! Just loved racing through the City and central London! I had a great time on the bike! (not so good in the 35 degree heat on the run though!)
I wouldn’t be to worried about the field! At 2:20 I guess you can go maybe a little faster in this race. Last year prob. about 150 in this cat.

I think you will have a great time!

BTW I’m skipping London to so MK this year.

You can get the results from last year on the website. There were some pretty average performances in there. Some even over the 2:30 mark. The only problem with racing in that cat is the early start, right after the elites.
