While shopping for wheels, I came across a set of hand built 50mm, clincher version, 2014 (0 mile), Toray T700SC carbon fiber, Sapim CX-RAY plays (2,3mm X 0,9mm), Alchemy ORC 20/24 hub.
Two questions:
the seller claims a weight of 1350g without the quick release and rim tape, isn’t this really low for a clincher wheel? Should I worry about the robustness?
is 900$ CAD too expensive for the wheels, titanium quick releases and pads?
What the heck is a CAD? As for the wheel. Good spokes and if properly built, a bomb proof wheel. However, as much as I love to build wheels…modern machine made wheels are more reliable.
Among wheelbuilders, the alchemy hubs are very highly reviewed and are apparently some of the best hubs money can buy. Cx rays are, well everyone knows Cx rays are good. No one knows too much about the rim unless you can give us a source. I’d say 900 cad, including titanium qrs( which are at least close to 100?) is quite a fair price.
1350 g is indeed rather light, but not unheard of on weightweenie circles.
How good a wheel is depends more on the wheelbuilder than the parts ( assuming they are all fit for purpose). You can have the best rims, hubs, and spokes in the world but if you’ve got a crap wheelbuilder it will be a crap wheel.
