Living in San Diego

It’s been about 7 years since I lived in San Diego. The base here in TX is closing, and we’re moving to CA. Any recommendations on where to live in San Diego? I’ll be working at the 32nd St. base. I’m single with no kids, so schools, etc are not an issue. Are the beaches still the good places for a single early 30’s guy? Downtown? Or is that too expensive. Last time I was there, I lived in Mission Valley, near the stadium.

East or south is the cheap stuff , at least 15-20 miles ( east of college / south of I 8 ). Anything with a 10 radius of the airport is high priced . Pieces of La mesa - Chula vista - National - El cajon -Santee - are cheaper , you really have to drive around . Find the ethnic - gay - Off the chart pricey - jammed up traffic beach areas , before making a choice .

I love it here in La Jolla. Well, actually I guess I’m technically in University City, but it’s the same thing.
If you’re looking to rent, prices are starting to get very good around here, what with the the state of the economy. I know someone who is going to be renting a 4 bedroom house for ~$2500 a month (with other people of course).
There are definitely cheaper places to live, but for the location (right by the beach, within reasonable distance of downtown and north county, etc.) it’s worth it.

Lots of good deals in east Chula Vista - it’s been overbuilt, then the economy dumped, now you can get very nice newer homes for relatively cheap.

I did some quick checking online and there seem to be at least some affordable loft style places downtown too. Anyone familiar with those? I’m not sure where would be ok to live downtown. I’ve been near the beaches before, so I’m just looking for perspective on other areas too.

Hey, I live in UTC, and would argue that it is nothing like La Jolla although people call it La Jolla. Anyway…YES! Downtown or more specifically Normal Heights, Kensington, University Heights, and parts of North Park are all really cool. Possibly South Park as well but I don’t know that area. Lots of restaurants and bars.
That’s the affordable single man’s way to go if you ask me. I just work at UCSD and my girlfriend’s and my life sort of revolves around this area, so that’s why we’re here. I’d be downtown in a minute if it made sense. Or if I could afford it - Windandsea/Birdrock…I’d be there for sure.
